ABC’s daytime talk juggernaut The View has left viewers outraged for sidestepping one of the most explosive media stories of the year: the sudden suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel under pressure from President Trump’s FCC.

For the second straight day, The View’s “Hot Topics” avoided Kimmel’s removal from the airwaves, even as fans flooded social media demanding answers. Instead, Friday’s episode, taped a day earlier, opened with Joy Behar dissecting Kamala Harris’ memoir and her near-pick of Pete Buttigieg as a running mate. From there, the panel segued into Martha Stewart’s thirst-trap photos and an interview with actress Lily James. Not a word about Kimmel.

“Are they gagged? Because this silence about Jimmy is deafening,” one YouTube commenter wrote. Another viewer fumed on X: “The View went after CBS for Colbert, but have nothing to say about Kimmel? I expected better from you.”

The fury comes amid heightened political pressure on ABC from Trump’s FCC Chair Brendan Carr, who on Thursday threatened to review whether The View itself qualifies as a “bona fide news program” under federal rules. Carr’s comments followed ABC’s abrupt decision to yank Kimmel after he mocked Republicans trying to spin the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend,” Kimmel said on air Monday, blasting MAGA operatives for “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.”

That remark was enough to set off Trump’s allies, who accused Kimmel of spreading “disinformation” through comedy. The network caved within days, suspending its longest-running late-night host without explanation.

A History of Speaking Out

What stings for many fans is that The View has not been shy about calling out censorship in the past. Just this summer, the panel slammed CBS for canceling Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show. Whoopi Goldberg assured Colbert, “We got your back,” while Sunny Hostin warned: “If this is political, this is the dismantling of our democracy.”

But now, with their own network’s biggest star sidelined, the women of The View have gone quiet.

Media analyst Howard Polskin told us the silence may not be accidental. “Disney CEO Bob Iger has been trying to deescalate open warfare with Trump. The View, as much as it prides itself on speaking truth, is still part of the corporate machine. And right now, the machine is scared.”

A Chilling Climate for Free Speech

The outrage reflects broader fears about shrinking space for dissenting voices under Trump’s second term. Advocacy groups have warned that the FCC has become an extension of the White House, targeting media critical of the president while ignoring pro-Trump propaganda outlets.

“If they can pull Jimmy Kimmel off the air for a joke, what’s next?” asked free speech lawyer Jill Wine-Banks. “This isn’t about comedy, it’s about the government deciding who gets to speak and who doesn’t. That’s not America—that’s authoritarianism.”

Meanwhile, fans continue to vent their anger at The View. “They were supposed to be the ones who stood up,” one disappointed viewer wrote on Facebook. “Instead, they’re acting like nothing’s happening while Trump dismantles free speech on their own network.”

The View has yet to respond.

  1. You people are deranged! Trump and the FCC didn’t force Kimmel off- ABC news affiliates refused to air Kimmels show and THAT forced the network to cancel it! You can’t be a network without media outlets airing your programs!! That’s why the view didn’t discuss it because they couldn’t blame it on Trump!

As to the FCC looking into whether the View is a news show they are absolutely right! It isn’t. Obviously by its very name “the view” it’s an opinion show however they hide behind claiming to be news so they can espouse opinions as fact! And that’s wrong.

We need journalism back like Cronkite and Huntley and Brinkley where they told you what happened, no opinions and opinions were aired in the editorial section clearly labeled as opinions

  2. It’s most likely they’ve been ordered not to discuss it, not to even bring it up, or they suffer the same fate. Trump has been targeting them for a while so them discussing the Kimmel situation would just give him ammo to go after them (again). Whether you like it or hate it (the shows), the shows – in and of themselves – are not the issue. The shutting down and “gagging” of free speech is the issue – in ALL forms, from all aspects and viewpoints. It is suppose to be a guarantee under the Constitution however this current administration cares not about such legal and moral things, so ….. This isn’t about a show being removed, or threatened … it’s a sign of a much bigger, far more reaching problem.

Personally I don’t/didn’t watch either show so I’m not seeing this on a fan level. I *am* seeing this as a citizen of the US who is watching the rights of fellow Americans (and myself) being slowly ripped away from us, and while some people are appalled, others are actually cheering it on, which I find both disappointing and disheartening. For those that are cheering it on, will you still be happy when it/they comes for you and/or your way of life??
