Michelle Obama Reveals What ‘Sealed the Deal’ in Barack Relationship

Michelle Obama is setting the record straight about her marriage to former President Barack Obama — and she’s doing it in her signature candid style.

On the latest episode of her hit podcast IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, the former first lady opened up about the early days of her relationship, sharing what she called the “moment everything clicked” with the man who would one day become the 44th president.

And yes — it involves Spike Lee, Chicago, and a life-changing first date.

Michelle recalled their first official date in the summer of 1989, when both were young lawyers at a Chicago law firm. At the time, Michelle was actually assigned to mentor Barack — something she admitted made her hesitant to see him romantically.

“I wasn’t sure if it was even appropriate,” she said on the podcast. “We worked in the same place. There were so few of us — so few Black folks in those rooms — but he was persistent. So I acquiesced.”

Barack, then a rising Harvard Law student with a reputation for being “brilliant but grounded,” meticulously planned a day that Michelle still remembers vividly: an afternoon walking through the Art Institute of Chicago, dinner at Lake Point Tower, and, finally, a screening of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing.

“After that movie, you had to talk,” Michelle told Lee, who joined the episode as a guest. “I wanted to know — did he see what I saw? Did he feel what I felt? We sat there for hours unpacking everything. That night… I’d say that probably sealed the deal.”

The Obamas’ personal lives have faced intense scrutiny this year after Michelle skipped President Donald Trump’s January inauguration — making headlines as the only living first lady not in attendance — and later missed former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral.

Conservative commentators seized on the absences as “proof” of marital trouble. Meghan McCain even fueled speculation on her own podcast, claiming she’d “heard from reputable people” that the Obamas were quietly splitting.
