An Arizona teenager is fighting for her life after collapsing onto a scorching-hot sidewalk during a brutal 110° heatwave — suffering devastating third-degree burns all over her body.

On August 1, 17-year-old high school junior June Shaver was walking the two miles home from Dysart High School when she suddenly collapsed, likely from heatstroke. Her grandfather, Larry Shaver, told 12 News that June “has burns all over her body” and has already undergone five surgeries.

“I think she had a seizure from the heat stroke and passed out,” he said. When June fell, she split her chin open and was left lying unconscious on the pavement until a passerby spotted her and called 911.

By the time she arrived at the ER, doctors recorded her body temperature at a staggering 106°. According to a GoFundMe set up to help with her care, it will be at least a year before June can return to school.

June’s third-degree burns are the most severe type, affecting not just the skin but also fat and muscle tissue beneath the surface. Doctors warn the damage can destroy nerves, cause permanent scarring, and require long, painful recoveries.

Her family said June was no stranger to the walk and had tried to stay hydrated along the way. “She’s walked it before and didn’t have any problems,” her grandfather said. “We made sure she had plenty of water. She even stopped and got more on the way, but I guess it was just too late. She’d gotten too hot.”

June was walking because her school bus route was eliminated after budget cuts left the district scrambling to manage an aging fleet. In a statement, the Dysart Unified School District defended the changes, citing financial struggles and the defeat of a bond measure in 2024 that would have funded new buses.

For now, June faces a long road to recovery, enduring multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation. Her family is urging the community to stay safe in the extreme heat and is hopeful voters will approve a new bond in November to restore bus routes and prevent future tragedies.
