Federal Judges Fear for Their Lives: ‘Somebody’s Going to Die’

A storm is brewing inside America’s federal judiciary — and it’s aimed straight at the Supreme Court.

According to an explosive NBC investigation, a dozen federal judges — appointed by both Democratic and Republican presidents, including Trump himself — are furious with the high court for quietly shredding their rulings on behalf of the Trump administration. And they’re sounding the alarm about the deadly consequences.

“It is inexcusable,” one federal judge said. “They don’t have our backs.” Another, who’s already received death threats over rulings that blocked parts of Trump’s agenda, delivered a chilling prediction: “Somebody is going to die.”

The anger centers on the Court’s controversial “shadow docket” — emergency rulings issued late at night, without hearings, and often without explanation. In 2025, this quiet fast-track has repeatedly handed victories to Trump on tariffs, immigration crackdowns, and sweeping executive powers.

Lower court judges say it leaves them exposed and powerless. They issue rulings after months of hearings and evidence, only to see them erased overnight.

“It’s like we’re being thrown under the bus,” another judge said. “The Supreme Court doesn’t just reverse us — it makes us targets.”

The most heated battles involve Trump’s massive tariff plan and aggressive immigration policies:

• Tariffs: When a federal panel ruled Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs illegal, senior adviser Stephen Miller accused the judges of launching a “judicial coup.” Within days, the Supreme Court reversed the ruling.
• Deportation flights: After Judge James Boasberg temporarily halted mass deportations to El Salvador, Trump erupted online, calling for the judge to be “IMPEACHED.” House Republicans even drafted impeachment articles.

For judges, these attacks aren’t theoretical. Threats against federal judges have spiked this year, with hundreds reported since March.

Justice Elena Kagan recently warned the Court’s secretive rulings risk “eroding public trust.” But the conservative majority — led by Chief Justice John Roberts — has stayed quiet as critics accuse the Court of becoming an extension of Trump’s White House.

Even Justice Brett Kavanaugh admitted frustration is boiling over, saying this week, “We can do better.” But judges on the ground want more than reassurances. They want transparency — and safety.
