Republican Congressman Barry Moore thought a town hall deep in Trump country would be friendly territory. Instead, he was laughed at, jeered, and ultimately chased out the back door by furious voters demanding answers about President Donald Trump’s policies.

The 40-minute event, hosted Thursday night in Daphne, Alabama, turned into a political minefield. Voters grilled Moore on everything from rural hospital closures to Trump’s Medicaid cuts and controversial immigration crackdowns. By the end, chants of “Shame!” filled the air as Moore slipped out a side exit to avoid the angry crowd.

The confrontation reached a boiling point when a woman asked why immigrants were being denied basic legal rights under Trump’s expanded deportation directives. “Due process for a citizen and a non-citizen are different things,” Moore replied. The crowd erupted in outrage, shouting “False!” and drowning him out completely. Some attendees stood and shook their heads in disbelief. “You represent all people, not just Trump,” one man shouted, as the crowd cheered in agreement.

Earlier in the evening, Moore was asked what he considered President Trump’s “most meaningful accomplishment” since returning to the White House in January. Moore’s answer: “Border security.” Laughter immediately swept through the room. “Next question!” several attendees shouted. Others accused Moore of lying when he claimed Medicaid cuts in Trump’s “American Renewal” megabill would “only affect undocumented immigrants.” “You’re lying to us,” one woman yelled. “This hurts everybody in this county!”

Moore isn’t alone. Across the country, Republican lawmakers are facing increasingly hostile crowds as President Trump pushes forward with sweeping second-term policies that critics say are gutting healthcare, immigration protections, and federal oversight. In Ohio, Rep. Warren Davidson was booed offstage after defending Trump’s rollback of federal housing funds. In Georgia, Rep. Rich McCormick faced jeers for justifying deep Medicaid and Social Security cuts. And earlier this week in Missouri, Rep. Mark Alford was told to “get [his] head out of Trump’s a–” during a live event.

Political analysts say the growing unrest underscores a widening rift—even in Republican strongholds. “Voters are angry because they’re living with the consequences of these policies,” said Dr. Karen Whitfield, a political science professor at Auburn University. “They’re seeing hospitals close, bills pile up, and loved ones deported. And they’re realizing these aren’t abstract talking points—they’re real lives.”

On Friday morning, Moore tried to downplay the chaotic exit during an interview on The Dale Jackson Show, a conservative Alabama radio program. “We left like any other event,” Moore insisted. “I think we tried to engage and answer questions, but unfortunately, it got hijacked.” He added that he remained “calm” throughout the night and accused “bad actors” of deliberately sabotaging the event.

But voters at the meeting told a different story. “He couldn’t answer anything without blaming someone else or repeating Trump talking points,” said Susan Daniels, a retired nurse from Daphne. “When you don’t listen to your constituents, you lose our respect.”

Moore, first elected in 2020, is currently running for retiring Senator Tommy Tuberville’s seat as Tuberville campaigns for Alabama governor. Political observers say Thursday’s disastrous town hall could haunt him. “He’s in trouble,” said Birmingham-based Democratic strategist Malik Edwards. “If you can’t hold the line in Baldwin County—where Trump won by nearly 80 percent—you’ve got a serious problem.”

This event is just the latest sign that Trump’s second term is reshaping Republican politics. Even in deep-red Alabama, frustration is boiling over—and lawmakers like Barry Moore are feeling the heat.
