What was supposed to be a celebration quickly spiraled into chaos Tuesday when hundreds of angry Mainers confronted Republican Sen. Susan Collins, drowning her out with boos and chants of “Shame!”

The event, meant to mark the completion of a two-year construction project on Searsport’s Main Street, became a flashpoint for mounting frustration with Collins’ record, her refusal to hold public town halls, and her alignment with parts of President Donald Trump’s controversial agenda.

Initially planned for the newly renovated Main Street, the ribbon-cutting was abruptly moved indoors after an estimated 200 protesters lined the sidewalks outside, holding handmade signs and chanting. But the move offered little relief.

Once Collins took the podium, protesters inside the venue unleashed another wave of chants. Some accused her of betraying constituents on health care and foreign policy.

“Susan Collins made it possible for one-third of Mainers to lose Medicare. Hospitals are closing. Families are suffering,” said protester Rachel Herbener, her voice hoarse from yelling. “She had the power to stop this bill, and she chose not to.”

Others slammed Collins for staying silent on the Trump administration’s handling of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, accusing her of complicity in “starving civilians.”

Adding fuel to the anger is Collins’ decades-long avoidance of open forums. According to the Maine Morning Star, the 72-year-old senator hasn’t held a traditional town hall in over 25 years.

“If Susan Collins won’t come and face us, we’ll come to her,” said protester Janis Hogan, who stood outside waving a sign reading “Do Your Job.”

Collins’ spokesperson has defended the decision, claiming the senator prefers “smaller, respectful conversations” over the “chaos” of large town halls. But Tuesday’s events revealed just how deep the resentment runs.

At one point, a visibly frustrated Collins tried to bargain with the protesters:

“So, what you are telling me is that you’re rejecting my suggestion to let the townspeople celebrate a monumental achievement,” she said, her voice cracking slightly. “If you can’t show them that courtesy, this is really bad — this is not the Maine I know.”

Her plea fell flat. The chants continued until the ceremony wrapped.

The confrontation comes at a tense moment for Collins, who has repeatedly clashed with President Trump this year despite being a Republican. After voting against two key Trump-backed bills earlier this summer, the president lashed out at her on Truth Social:

“Republicans, when in doubt, vote the exact OPPOSITE of Susan Collins. You can’t go wrong!”

Political analysts say the public rift with Trump is costing Collins support on both sides. While Democrats view her as enabling the administration’s policies, Trump loyalists see her as a traitor.

Collins isn’t alone. Across the country, Republican lawmakers returning home during the August recess are facing intensifying public anger:

  • Rep. Mark Alford was told to “get your head out of Trump’s a–” during a fiery Missouri town hall Monday.
  • Rep. Josh Brecheen struggled to explain what the Trump administration is doing about skyrocketing living costs at a tense Oklahoma event Tuesday.
  • In Wyoming, Rep. Harriet Hageman has been confronted repeatedly over her unwavering support of Trump’s domestic agenda.

For many voters, patience is running out — and the backlash is growing louder.

    1. Leave it to WOKE NextGen to get it backwards!
It’s NOT “alignment with Trump” getting her hate but going AGAINST Trump/MAGA/GOP/American People and along with Democrats’ EVIL !!!

    1. I wish all protesters were checked for their legal residency. Some travel from state to state. It’s their job.

  1. This is yet another stupidly written article! First NO ONE LOST THEIR MEDICARE BENEFITS! Medicare is something we and our employers pay into during our working lives and once we claim our social security also paid by us and our employers then a small fee is deducted from our SS check and we get Medicare!

These PROTESTORS and all the others are paid democrat activists because the Democrats do not know how to be civilized! Collins hasn’t held a town hall for 25 years yet keeps getting elected by the voters? Why didn’t they protest against her while Biden or Obama was President?

This is how desperate the Dems have lowered themselves too!
