A Giant Portrait of Trump Draped Over D.C. Building Sparks Outrage

A colossal portrait of President Donald Trump now dominates the façade of the U.S. Department of Labor building, setting off a political firestorm and comparisons to some of history’s most authoritarian regimes.

The three-story banner, unveiled Monday, features Trump’s second inaugural portrait, his “America 250” initiative logo, and the slogan “American Workers First.” Flanked by a giant American flag and a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt, the display commands attention — and critics say, obedience.

“This isn’t just a banner. It’s a message,” said Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts. “Government buildings should serve the people, not glorify the president.”

Social media erupted almost instantly, with opponents comparing the spectacle to propaganda from North Korea, the Soviet Union, and Mao-era China.

“Looks like something I’ve seen before,” McGovern posted alongside a photo of Kim Jong Un’s towering portraits.

California Governor Gavin Newsom was more biting: “THANK YOU, GLORIOUS LEADER!” he wrote on X, sharing an image of crowds bowing to Mao Zedong.

Political scientist Evan A. Feigenbaum also weighed in, bluntly calling it “strong Chairman Mao vibes.”

This is not the first time federal buildings have been used to showcase Trump’s image. Earlier this spring, the Department of Agriculture draped a banner featuring Trump beside Abraham Lincoln — a move that critics called “historical revisionism.”

Experts warn that these displays reflect a broader trend. “In authoritarian states, leaders cultivate a constant visual presence to equate themselves with the nation,” said Dr. Amanda Klein, a historian at Georgetown University. “This is classic personality cult behavior.”

The banner’s slogan has also struck a nerve. While Trump casts himself as a champion of the working class, labor leaders argue his policies tell a different story.

“Gutting union rights, cutting Medicaid, and slashing food assistance isn’t putting ‘American workers first’ — it’s selling them out,” said AFL-CIO president Liz Shuler.

Since returning to office, Trump has stripped collective bargaining rights from more than one million federal employees — the largest rollback of organized labor power in modern U.S. history. His Department of Labor is also moving to repeal over 60 worker protections, including minimum wage and overtime safeguards for nearly 4 million home health care workers.

Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich didn’t mince words: “Trump isn’t the workers’ president. He’s the corporate CEOs’ president.”

The controversy comes amid sweeping cuts to social safety nets. Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” has already imposed strict work requirements on Medicaid and SNAP recipients, slashed $186 billion in food assistance, and tightened eligibility rules — measures analysts warn could push millions into poverty.

“These are devastating changes,” said Maryland State Delegate Joe Vogel. “You don’t hang a three-story portrait of yourself while ripping away healthcare and food from working families — unless you’re trying to distract from what you’re really doing.”

The White House has not ruled out placing similar banners on other federal buildings, fueling concerns that Washington could soon resemble a “Trump-branded empire.”

“This isn’t patriotism,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA). “This is propaganda.”

For now, the towering portrait of Trump remains in place — a stark reminder of the growing clash between executive power and democratic norms under his second term.
