MSNBC Host Skewers Trump Over “Cankles Cover-Up”

President Donald Trump’s latest Oval Office photo op is drawing new scrutiny — not for policy, but for what MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell claims the White House is desperately trying to hide: the president’s swollen ankles.

During Tuesday night’s episode of The Last Word, O’Donnell unveiled a photo from Trump’s recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, accusing the president of staging the shot to obscure what the administration calls a “minor circulation issue.”

“Donald Trump now has an extra incentive to stay behind the Resolute Desk,” O’Donnell quipped. “Because that desk is hiding the ankles where a lifetime of Big Macs finally caught up with him.”

Trump, 79, has faced persistent rumors about his health since returning to the White House in 2025, but the chatter intensified after the White House admitted last month that the president has chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) — a condition that can cause swelling and pain in the lower legs.

Official statements have downplayed the diagnosis, calling it “common for his age” and “non-impactful to his duties.” But O’Donnell suggested the administration’s efforts to control photo angles tell a different story.

“Every official Oval Office photo now seems to feature a coffee table, a model airplane, or a chair perfectly placed to block the lower half of his body,” O’Donnell said. “It’s like they’ve hired a whole team of ankle bodyguards.”

While swollen ankles might seem trivial, O’Donnell and other critics argue it fits a broader pattern of secrecy in the Trump White House.

“If they’re hiding this, what else are they hiding?” asked Dr. Lila Sanderson, a Georgetown health policy expert. “CVI itself isn’t alarming — but the obsession with concealment raises transparency issues.”

O’Donnell used the segment to revisit Trump’s long-documented love affair with fast food — a habit critics have linked to his current health issues.

“That’s one of the ways a lifetime of McDonald’s catches up with you,” O’Donnell said. “Those Big Macs eventually show up in the ankles hanging over your shoes.”

The former president has famously boasted about his diet, once telling reporters he avoids exercise and prefers “clean” fast food like McDonald’s and KFC. But health experts warn that high sodium and saturated fats can worsen CVI symptoms, particularly in older adults.

The controversy lands at a politically sensitive moment for Trump. As he positions himself for a bruising re-election fight in 2028, critics say the White House is trying to control every image of the president — literally.

“He knows the optics matter,” said Democratic strategist Angela Price. “He doesn’t want Americans seeing him compared side by side with younger, fitter European leaders.”

Ironically, O’Donnell noted, Trump didn’t seem to care about the optics when meeting with Vladimir Putin last week in Alaska, where photos showed the president seated casually with both ankles exposed.

“Maybe he feels safest showing everything when he’s with Putin,” O’Donnell jabbed.

While the White House insists the president is in “excellent health,” O’Donnell ended his segment with a warning:
