“They’re going to kill us here, little by little.”

In the sweltering heart of the Florida Everglades, deep inside a sprawl of white tents surrounded by gators and barbed wire, a horror show is unfolding—one that some are calling President Donald Trump’s new “Gulag in the Glades.”

The Alligator Alcatraz detention center, a controversial migrant holding facility pushed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and publicly praised by President Trump, is now facing explosive allegations of abuse, violence, and degrading conditions that critics say amount to state-sanctioned human rights violations.

And for those trapped inside, the warnings are dire.

“They’re going to kill us here, little by little,” said one detainee in a chilling recorded phone call obtained by Status Coup. “No one pays attention to us… They abuse us in every way—with the food, in the bathroom. Everything.”

Launched on July 1 and rushed to completion in under a month, Alligator Alcatraz sits on a defunct airstrip, 27 desolate miles from the nearest town of Ochopee (population: 131). The facility is designed to hold up to 3,000 immigrants, most of whom have no criminal record in the United States.

President Trump personally toured the site during its opening ceremony, lauding it as a “tough but necessary solution” to what he called the “illegal alien invasion.” But behind the official photo ops, whistleblowers are now revealing a darker truth.

Lindsey, a former corrections officer at the site, told NBC Miami the facility felt “like an oversized kennel.”

“They have no sunlight. There’s no clock in there. They don’t even know what time it is,” she said. “They shower every other day—sometimes every four days. The toilets overflow constantly. And when it rains, water just pours through the tents.”

Each tent contains eight massive cages, cramming in nearly 40 detainees per unit. With Florida’s brutal August heat and relentless storms, conditions have rapidly deteriorated, Lindsey claims.

One Cuban detainee described guards as “racist and power hungry,” alleging that officers regularly grope and humiliate inmates under the guise of searches.

“They touch us all—our groins, our asses—to see if we’ve brought cookies or fries,” he said. “They search and touch our whole bodies in a weird way. We feel violated.”

According to the same recording, guards have also allegedly kicked handcuffed men and stepped on detainees’ hands. “It doesn’t stop,” the man said. “I’ve seen nothing but injustice and mistreatment for 30 days.”

Pedro Lorenzo Concepción, a 44-year-old Cuban national, told El País he led a nearly two-week hunger strike inside the facility. He says the protest only ended when he was transferred to a separate detention center in South Florida.

While the Department of Homeland Security denies any ongoing hunger strikes, Concepción’s story is echoed by others sounding the alarm.

One internal source fears a humanitarian crisis is imminent if nothing changes.

“This has to come out one way or another,” the detainee said. “Because they’re going to start dying in here.”

The facility is managed by GardaWorld, a private security contractor awarded a $38 million contract. Lindsey, the former guard, says she was fired for allegedly altering medical documents—a charge she denies.

She also raised concerns about the guards themselves, who reportedly live in poorly maintained trailers adjacent to the tents.

“Not everybody there is a criminal,” she said. “These people are still human. They pulled them from their livelihood. They’re scared.”

Despite the growing outcry, the Florida Division of Emergency Management—which oversees the site—dismissed the reports as “repeatedly debunked.” They declined to respond to multiple press requests.

Outside the facility, protests have become routine. Human rights advocates rally against the prison-like conditions, while Trump supporters reportedly take selfies next to the “Alligator Alcatraz” sign like it’s a tourist attraction.

But for many Democrats, civil rights groups, and immigration advocates, the images coming out of this Everglades compound echo an alarming trend under Trump’s second term: mass detention, dehumanization, and a growing silence from those in power.

“This isn’t just a Florida story,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on X. “This is what cruelty looks like as policy. We’ve seen it before. We’re seeing it again.”

  1. Funny how there’s always a storyline to accommodate the democrats illegals well being. But the hell with taking care of the issues of everyday lives of the Americans taxpayer. Its great to see .That the demonrats will no longer get their way for their constant propaganda and lies.

  2. Maybe if they where not ILLEGALS they would not be there. They broke the law with the help of Biden an Obama and now they are paring for it. Keep crying, maybe some others will hear and stop breaking the law.

  3. Sorry, all the 5-star hotels are full. You would not be there if you didnt break the law. I am sure they are processing your air fare and ticket as we all write this comment. Send them a postcard from your homeland and stay there

  4. Oh nooo are the officers on horses using whips on the poor illegals 😬😳 ANOTHER BOLD FACED LIE 🤥 🤥 UNBELIEVABLE 🤨🤨

    1. Our veterans were in worse. conditions in the wars they fought. The illegals have no one shooting at them torturing them. Unlike our veterans who suffered and some never came home. As far as I’m concerned they should have put these critters at the borders they were coming in at. Tired of the boo boos from wacky 🤪 people that have nothing better to do. They can join the illegals and get out

  5. This is simply a repeat of goods last term in office.
    He has
    no control
    no concerns
    no compassion
    no heart for those suffering

    1. Yep, your ‘good’ little Jokementia Bribery only loved ILLEGALS, deadly fake vaccines, being a dictator, LifeTime Welfare, high taxes, weirdos, perverts, junkies, CRIME WAVE, criminals, and murderers…
