What started as a routine town hall turned into a political nightmare for Republican Rep. Bryan Steil as furious constituents erupted over his defense of President Trump’s latest policies—most notably the so-called “Big Beautiful” budget bill that critics say guts health care and empowers secretive immigration raids.

The high school auditorium was packed with over 250 concerned voters Thursday night, but Steil could barely get a full sentence out. The moment he tried to justify Trump’s controversial spending and immigration agenda, the crowd let loose.

“Why are ICE agents wearing masks and going around unidentified?!” one woman shouted, igniting a roar of approval from the audience.

Steil attempted a canned response, pivoting to blame the Biden administration for a “moral hazard” at the border—but he never got the words out. He was drowned in boos, heckling, and calls to resign.

“There’s nothing wrong with disagreeing,” Steil said, visibly flustered, as the audience shouted him down. “We’ll probably agree to disagree,” he added, prompting more outrage.

The blowback comes just weeks after President Trump signed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” into law on July 4 with a bombastic White House ceremony complete with stealth bombers, fireworks, and MAGA fanfare. While Trump called it a “once-in-a-generation triumph,” analysts and voters alike are calling it a disaster.

The bill slashes Medicaid funding and greenlights new powers for federal agencies—including ICE, now deploying masked, unidentified agents across U.S. cities. It also cuts education subsidies and redirects billions toward military expansion and border wall development.

According to the nonpartisan Wisconsin Policy Forum, over 75,000 Wisconsinites are expected to lose Medicaid coverage under the plan. That figure loomed large in the minds of attendees, many of whom held homemade signs reading “HANDS OFF MEDICAID” and “WE ARE NOT INVISIBLE.”

An elderly veteran in the audience, clutching a small American flag, quietly delivered a gut punch: “I am so disappointed,” he said. Another man behind him shouted in agreement: “Yeah!”

“Southeast Wisconsin has not been represented by you,” the older man continued. “President Trump seems to run this district through you.”

One woman took it further. “You just don’t relate to us anymore,” she said. “It’s time to go.”

The collapse of the town hall echoed a similar disaster in Iowa, where Sen. Joni Ernst defended the bill in June by bizarrely telling voters: “Well, we’re all going to die.”

Trump loyalists like Steil are in damage-control mode as Democrats set their sights on flipping the House in 2026. Steil is one of two Wisconsin Republicans on the DCCC’s “top targets” list, and after Thursday’s debacle, that target just got bigger.

Outside the high school, about 50 demonstrators rallied against the budget, waving signs and chanting, “Healthcare is a human right!”

Steil’s appearance was his first in-person town hall since January—likely his last for a while.

As one Elkhorn resident bluntly told MSNBC afterward, “We didn’t come here to be lied to. We came here to tell him we’re done.”

  1. People are believing the lies told by the Democrats and others who have not read the bill. Please do your research before you believe everything that is in the mainstream media or on social media from folks who have not researched the bill. Yes, there are some modifications to Medicaid, but it is not being cut to folks who need it. Just like there are over a million people who are over 100 years of age, still listed on the Social Security list. Some are even 120 years old.

Just don’t believe everything you are told by either party. Find out what their agenda is.. Do they just hate Trump?

  2. Democrats count on emotionally driven voters, such as the ones the education system works to produce! Add on the losers in the MSM and you have democrats pushing their stalinist type society agin!

  3. President John F Kennedy, a stanch Democrat: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask not what you can do for your country.” The behavior of the audience not giving a Representative the courtesy to listen and learn is why this country is a mess. Everyone needs to read the Bill that thou doeth protest too much. Shakespeare
Its ok Congressman another crowd yelled give us Barabbas and crucify Jesus. People forget there are 50 states that have an interest not just one county or district. “A fool uttereth his whole mind. Very few know how to: “Be still and know that I am God.”
The Jews were whining after coming out of Bondage in Egypt, they bitched and moaned and griped about how much better Bondage was. God let them wander 40 years in the desert until the all died save 2 of the original generation for being ungrateful inhospitable. Sounds like mankind hasn’t grown much same old crap God has been dealing with for a millennia. Making Assumptions uneducated , not knowledgeable as to what is truth. Democrats Party and Soros, HRC Russia, Russia, Russia. Sounds like the same people again and again.
