The Secret Service is reeling after one of its own agents allegedly tried to sneak his wife aboard a classified support flight for President Donald Trump’s latest trip to Scotland—a move that has triggered an internal investigation and renewed concerns about discipline inside the agency.
According to agency insiders, the agent—whose name has not been released—attempted to get his wife, an Air Force service member, onto a “carplane” flight used for transporting critical staff and armored vehicles ahead of the president’s controversial U.K. weekend. The incident reportedly unfolded just hours before Trump left Joint Base Andrews on July 25.
“This wasn’t just a rookie mistake,” said one Democratic congressional aide who was briefed on the matter. “It’s part of a worrying pattern inside an agency that’s supposed to be above reproach. The American public deserves better.”
Sources say the Secret Service agent, a recent hire, already had a history of disciplinary problems during his initial training. Despite warnings from supervisors that personal guests were strictly prohibited, the agent pressed ahead, and his wife managed to attend at least one official agency briefing at a Maryland hotel before showing up at the “distinguished visitor lounge” at Andrews Air Force Base. She was discovered there, moments before boarding, and promptly escorted away.
“No Secret Service protectees were on board, and there was no impact to the president’s security,” insisted a Secret Service spokesperson in a statement to the Daily Beast. But that hasn’t stopped lawmakers and ethics watchdogs from raising alarms.
“It’s outrageous that any government agent would risk undermining the security apparatus around the president, especially at a time when international tensions are so high,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), a member of the House Oversight Committee. “It raises serious questions about the agency’s hiring and training standards under this administration.”
The scandal is only the latest in a cascade of embarrassing moments for Trump’s summer getaway. Even before Air Force One touched down in Glasgow, Scottish newspaper The National greeted the president with a scathing front page: “CONVICTED US FELON TO ARRIVE IN SCOTLAND.” (Trump, recently convicted on 34 felony counts in New York, remains defiant but has faced widespread international criticism.)
Crowds of protesters lined the roads from the airport to Trump’s luxury Turnberry golf resort, waving banners referencing the ongoing Epstein files controversy and chanting calls for justice. The protests continued across the weekend, with demonstrations erupting in at least three Scottish cities and outside both of Trump’s golf courses.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Fiona Douglas, a teacher from Glasgow who joined Saturday’s rally. “Scotland is sending a message: we don’t want his brand of politics or scandal here.”
Insiders say the weekend was far from restful for Trump, whose mood was described as “tense” amid swirling scandals and a new trade deal with the European Union that was immediately slammed by The Wall Street Journal for abandoning the president’s signature economic agenda.
Even his press conference with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer was nearly drowned out—literally—by the president’s own bagpipers, who reportedly struck up a raucous tune just as Trump tried to address the international press.
Asked by reporters about the latest Secret Service embarrassment, Trump was uncharacteristically subdued: “I’m actually not in a good mood,” he admitted. “But we’re handling it.”
For Democrats, the episode is another sign of what they call “mounting chaos” in Trump’s administration as the 2026 midterms approach. “We need leadership focused on the rule of law, not more headlines about lawlessness—whether in the Secret Service or the Oval Office,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
As the investigation continues, the Secret Service faces a familiar and unwelcome task: picking up the pieces after yet another self-inflicted wound.
