A routine Saturday shopping trip turned into a nightmare when a man armed with a folding knife went on a violent stabbing spree inside a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, injuring at least 11 people and sparking panic throughout the store.

The suspect—described as a 42-year-old male—is now in police custody. Authorities say he acted alone, but as of Sunday morning, a motive remains a mystery.

“People Were Screaming and Running”

The chaos unfolded at approximately 4:43 p.m., according to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office. Shoppers say the man began stabbing people at random in the front of the store near the self-checkout lanes before moving deeper into the aisles.

“It was absolute hell,” said witness Tammy Rollins, who was shopping with her two kids when the attack began. “People were screaming and running. I saw a woman bleeding from her arm, and another man on the ground. I grabbed my kids and ran.”

Surveillance footage reportedly shows the man entering the store calmly, then suddenly pulling a knife from his jacket and lunging at unsuspecting customers.

Fast Police Response—and Bravery from the Public

A sheriff’s deputy was already nearby and arrived within minutes. But law enforcement say it was brave citizens who helped subdue the attacker.

“We can confirm that multiple individuals within the store risked their own safety to help restrain the suspect until officers arrived,” said Sheriff Michael Shea in a press briefing. “Their actions likely saved lives.”

No additional suspects are believed to be involved. The attacker’s identity has not yet been released, and officials are still working to determine whether the incident was politically, religiously, or personally motivated.

The FBI also confirmed that federal agents have joined the investigation, though they are currently treating the case as an isolated act of violence.

Victims Clinging to Life

Munson Medical Center, the region’s primary trauma facility, confirmed that it is treating all 11 victims. As of 8:30 p.m. Saturday, five were listed in serious condition, and six were considered critical.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Munson praised its staff for their rapid response.

“Our team mobilized immediately to handle the influx of patients,” the hospital said. “We are proud of our staff, who worked through the shock and horror of this event to deliver expert care.”

A Quiet Town Shaken

Traverse City, known more for cherry festivals and summer lakeside tourism than violent crime, has been rattled by the attack.

“This just doesn’t happen here,” said local resident Mark Jensen. “We bring our kids to that Walmart all the time. It’s scary to think how easily this could’ve happened to anyone.”

President Donald Trump has not yet commented on the incident, but Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a brief statement Saturday evening, calling the attack “devastating” and urging citizens to support the victims.

“This was an unspeakable act of violence in a place we all expect to feel safe,” Whitmer said. “Our hearts are with the victims and their families tonight.”

What Comes Next

Law enforcement officials say the suspect is being held in the Grand Traverse County Jail and is expected to face multiple felony charges, including attempted murder.

The Walmart store remains closed as the investigation continues, and officials are reviewing hours of security footage to reconstruct the attack.

Sheriff Shea concluded his remarks with a message of resolve: “We will get answers. We will bring justice. And we will not let fear define our community.”
