Chaos erupted just after sunrise Monday when gunfire tore through the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, leaving multiple victims injured—and some dead—in what police are calling a “critical incident.”
Authorities confirm that the Reno Police Department responded to the scene around 7:25 a.m. after receiving reports of an active shooter on the casino property. Within moments, the encounter escalated into a police-involved shooting just outside the building.
City officials are describing the situation as both tragic and deeply unsettling.
“Tragically, lives have been lost this morning in Reno in yet another act of senseless gun violence,” wrote Reno City Councilman Devon Reese in a somber Facebook statement. “We cannot accept this as normal. Not here. Not anywhere.”
While the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Reno Police are leading the investigation, officials have yet to release a full casualty count or details on the shooter’s condition. What is known is that several victims were rushed to local hospitals, and some did not survive.
“My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community,” Reese added. “Reno is strong—but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation.”
The Grand Sierra Resort—one of Reno’s largest and most popular casino destinations—was immediately placed on lockdown. Guests reported hearing a rapid series of gunshots followed by shouting and police sirens.
“I thought it was fireworks at first, but then people started screaming,” said one witness staying on the 17th floor, who asked not to be named. “The casino floor was in total panic. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Video from outside the casino shows a large law enforcement presence, with multiple police vehicles, crime scene tape, and tactical units surrounding the property.
Law enforcement officials have not confirmed whether the shooter was acting alone or if there were additional threats. The identity of the suspect remains unknown.
This marks yet another high-profile shooting in a country already reeling from an ongoing wave of public gun violence. The incident adds to a growing list of deadly attacks at entertainment venues and public spaces—once considered safe havens.
The Grand Sierra Resort, a staple in Reno’s tourism industry, boasts a 24-hour casino, concert venues, and family attractions, and often hosts thousands of visitors at any given time.
The Reno Police Department and Washoe County authorities have promised a full briefing as the investigation unfolds.
