Jenna Bush Hager says her dad was “kind of mad” when she asked about Barack and Michelle splitting—calling the rumors flat-out false.

In a rare moment of bipartisan loyalty, former President George W. Bush took a firm—and emotional—stand against the swirling online rumors that Barack and Michelle Obama’s marriage was on the rocks.

On the July 17 episode of Today with Jenna & Friends, Bush’s daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, recalled the moment she called her dad to ask about the speculation that the Obamas were headed for divorce.

“I remember I called my dad and I was like, ‘Have you heard this rumor?!’” said Jenna, now 43. “And he was like, ‘I don’t believe it. It’s not true.’”

But it didn’t stop there.

“He was kind of mad that I even called to ask,” she continued. “He said, ‘That isn’t true. I know them, and it isn’t true.’”

The Obamas have been the subject of relentless tabloid speculation, especially after Michelle skipped several major events earlier this year—including President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and Donald Trump’s second inauguration in January 2025. That absence alone ignited a firestorm of gossip across social media and far-right news outlets.

But the Obamas are making it clear: the rumors are just that—rumors.

In a July episode of Michelle Obama’s IMO podcast, the former first lady and her brother Craig Robinson joked about the speculation. Craig teased the couple, asking, “Wait, you guys like each other?” Michelle replied with a grin, “That’s the rumor mill,” before Barack chimed in with, “She took me back! It was touch and go for a while.”

The pair’s lighthearted exchange was a rare public moment amid months of anonymous “insider” chatter.

Despite being political opposites, George W. Bush and Michelle Obama have famously shared a warm personal friendship. Whether it’s laughing together at official events or sharing moments of grief at national memorials, their bond has caught the attention of Americans hungry for unity.

“I had the opportunity to sit by your father at funerals, the highs and the lows,” Michelle told Jenna on Today in a past interview. “We shared stories about our kids and our parents. Our values are the same. We disagree on policy, but we don’t disagree on humanity.”

It’s a sentiment Bush echoed himself in a 2021 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, saying, “I think it’s a problem that Americans are so polarized in their thinking that they can’t imagine a George W. Bush and a Michelle Obama being friends.”

In a political climate defined by division and disinformation—particularly under President Donald Trump’s second term—Americans are once again reminded of how easily falsehoods can go viral. That includes rumors about relationships, especially when those involved are beloved public figures like the Obamas.

“Sometimes when you’re in the public eye like that, those rumors start,” Jenna said on her show. “But my dad knew right away it was nonsense.”

At a time when truth often feels optional and outrage is currency, it’s no small thing for a former Republican president to draw the line.

And that line? Don’t mess with the Obamas.
