By the time Chelsea lifted the FIFA Club World Cup trophy Sunday night, the biggest question wasn’t about the game — it was about why President Donald Trump refused to leave the stage.
In a moment that stunned fans and left players visibly confused, Trump inserted himself into Chelsea’s historic 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain by lingering — uninvited — at the center of their championship celebration. What should’ve been a joyous, spotlight moment for the players turned into an uncomfortable photo-op with a grinning Trump front and center.
The surreal scene unfolded at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where over 80,000 fans had gathered. Following FIFA tradition, Trump was invited to present the trophy to Chelsea. What happened next was not part of the script.
Video from the broadcast shows team captain Reece James motioning to Trump to move aside so the squad could lift the trophy — but Trump held his ground. Midfielder Cole Palmer, who scored twice and was named the tournament’s best player, even tried to pause the celebration until the president moved. But Trump stayed locked in place, blocking the team’s moment.

“He just wouldn’t go,” said James afterward. “They told us he’d hand off the trophy and exit, but… that’s not what happened.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, a longtime Trump ally, also tried nudging the president off the platform. That didn’t work either.
With Trump refusing to budge, the team had no choice but to awkwardly celebrate around him. At one point, Infantino had to physically guide the president behind the players to clear the cameras’ view.
“I thought it was a bit odd,” said Palmer. “It’s our moment, you know?”
The president didn’t seem fazed. He quickly posted a photo of himself alongside the Chelsea squad on Truth Social — not noticing (or not caring) that Palmer looked visibly annoyed in the shot.
Meanwhile, fans at MetLife had already booed Trump earlier in the evening — first during the national anthem, and again when he stepped onto the pitch. His presence was met with even more criticism after an awkward pre-game interview with DAZN, where he offered the energy of a confused tourist: “I am having a really great time. Tremendous sport.”
This isn’t the first time Trump has clashed with the world of soccer. Just weeks earlier, players from Italian club Juventus — including U.S. national team stars — were left standing in stunned silence as Trump veered off-topic during a White House photo op, ranting about missile strikes and gender in sports.
“He doesn’t understand the moment belongs to the players, not him,” a former U.S. Soccer official told us under condition of anonymity. “It’s like he thinks every room he enters becomes a campaign rally.”
Trump’s bizarre behavior casts an uncomfortable shadow over the lead-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host. His close relationship with Infantino raises questions about how politics might continue to intersect with the tournament.
For Chelsea, though, the focus was on the trophy — even if they had to share the stage with a president who just wouldn’t leave.
“Next time,” said a Chelsea staffer bluntly, “maybe just mail the trophy.”

Oh? Well, Chelsea, he is not only the President of the United States, but he is also a citizen of the U.S. Granted, it was your moment to celebrate, but you were also a guest. You and Mr. Anonymous need to get over it, or whine about it if it makes you feel better?
The players, fans, and world wanted Trump there and he knew it…
gave trump a chance to PRETEND it was ALL about HIM. yet again. he ALWAYS wanted to be hailed for his sports ability. problem is…you gotta have the ability. he didn’t. why he got drug around by his criminal dad.
Poor little children just can’t handke it!
Where are the crying towels?
Trump.is so ignorant and arrogant. If he had any common sense he would have let the players own the stage.
