In a bold Fourth of July announcement that sent shockwaves through the political world, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk declared the formation of a brand-new political force: the America Party.

“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk posted Saturday on X, the platform he owns and often uses as a political megaphone. The post came just hours after a viral Independence Day poll on whether Americans were ready to ditch the traditional Democratic and Republican options. The result? A resounding “yes,” with more than 1.2 million votes cast and 65 percent in favor of starting a new party.

This isn’t Musk’s first political detour—but it’s by far his most direct.

From Tech King to Political Disruptor

Though born in South Africa, Musk became a U.S. citizen in 2002 and has since built Tesla, SpaceX, and now a budding political machine. He once aligned closely with President Donald Trump, even holding a short-lived position at the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) during Trump’s second term.

But after a spectacular and public falling out with the president, Musk pivoted. Now, he’s challenging the system itself.

“Let’s be honest: we don’t have a two-party system anymore—we have a uniparty,” Musk wrote in another post, accompanied by a meme of a two-headed snake labeled “End the Uniparty.” “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, both parties are guilty.”

A Long Shot… or a Serious Threat?

Musk can’t run for president—foreign-born citizens are barred—but he made it clear he intends to flex his influence through candidates. His strategy? Take just a handful of Senate and House seats to control the balance of power.

“Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws,” Musk posted. “We could actually make Congress work for the people again.”

Experts aren’t so sure. “There are major structural barriers to forming a viable third party,” said Grant Reeher, a political science professor at Syracuse University. “It takes massive money, infrastructure, and boots on the ground.” Still, with Musk’s billions and a dedicated online army, that obstacle may not be insurmountable.

Americans Might Be Ready

A new poll by Quantus Insights found that 40 percent of registered voters would consider backing a Musk-aligned third party—cutting into both Republican and Democratic bases. Historically, third-party talk is popular in theory. In 2023, Gallup found that 63 percent of Americans supported the idea of a third party, though actual support rarely materializes at the ballot box.

Another YouGov poll from June found that 46 percent of U.S. adults believe a third party is necessary, with support from both sides of the aisle.

Yet skeptics warn the move could split the conservative vote. “If Musk launches this party, it could gift-wrap the House for Democrats in 2026,” said Dafydd Townley, an American politics expert at the University of Portsmouth. “The GOP should be very worried.”

Kevin Madden, a longtime Republican strategist, added: “Most voters still fall back on their tribal loyalties come Election Day. But Musk isn’t trying to play by old rules—he’s rewriting the playbook entirely.”

What Comes Next?

Musk’s next move is unclear, but insiders believe he’s already recruiting candidates for 2026 and beyond. If successful, the America Party could act as a legislative swing vote—functioning like a Silicon Valley version of the Freedom Caucus.

Whether the America Party is a serious power grab or another Musk-brand stunt remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: in a nation exhausted by political gridlock, the appetite for disruption is very real.

And Elon Musk is ready to serve it.

    1. Musk needs to just suck up being DOGE’d like he told everyone else to do that HE DOGE’d!

  1. It’s about time, maybe a third party will help straighten out the other two dysfunctional ones we already have.

  2. “America Party” covers several countries, not just The United States. Those countries may not like being part of Elon’s political plans and choose to remain independent.

  3. Why if you cannot become the president because you were not born in the United States of America the same as Arnold and you aren\’t able to further you political Hope\’s and dreams

    1. He expects to find cheap paid politicians with no morals and no values like the Democrats have…
