Republican Intern Killed in D.C. Shooting

A promising young congressional intern with dreams of shaping America’s financial future was shot dead in Washington, D.C., after being caught in a chaotic, targeted shootout that’s left the nation’s capital rattled — and investigators scrambling.

Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old intern for Rep. Ron Estes (R-KS), was fatally struck Monday night just blocks from Capitol Hill, in what officials are calling a “reckless burst of indiscriminate gunfire.” According to police, the bullets weren’t meant for him — but that didn’t matter.

The shooting happened around 10:25 p.m. near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Witnesses say multiple gunmen opened fire, sending pedestrians running for cover. Tarpinian-Jachym, a finance major and political science minor at UMass Amherst, was found unconscious on the sidewalk. He died at the hospital shortly after.

Two others — a 16-year-old boy and an adult woman — were also hit but survived with non-life-threatening injuries. Neither are believed to have been the intended targets.

“This was a senseless act of violence that took the life of a bright young man simply walking the streets of our city,” D.C. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith said during a press conference Tuesday morning. “We will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice.”

Tarpinian-Jachym had only recently arrived in Washington for his summer internship. Friends say he was “thrilled” to work in public service and hoped to someday run for office. Back home in Massachusetts, his family is devastated.

“Eric was the kind of person who saw possibility in every challenge,” a cousin told a local outlet. “He believed in this country and wanted to be part of making it better.”

Rep. Estes, who represents Kansas’ 4th Congressional District, released a statement praising the young man’s warmth and work ethic. “Eric’s smile could light up a room,” the congressman said. “He brought energy and enthusiasm to every task, and we are heartbroken by his loss.”

The gunmen remain on the loose. Authorities believe at least two shooters were involved, and a $25,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and appealing to the public for tips.

Residents in the area say violence has become too common, even in neighborhoods once considered safe. “We heard the shots — it sounded like a war zone,” said one eyewitness, a rideshare driver who was picking up a passenger nearby. “There were people ducking behind cars, just screaming.”

As tributes pour in for Tarpinian-Jachym, his death is reigniting debate over public safety in the nation’s capital — particularly as the city hosts an influx of young interns, tourists, and lawmakers each summer.

“He came here to learn how to serve his country,” said a fellow intern, “and he ended up dying in its capital.”
