In her first major public appearance since abruptly canceling a Royal Ascot appearance last month, Princess Kate Middleton returned to royal duties Wednesday and opened up about the “shockingly hard” aftermath of her cancer treatment.
During a quiet visit to Colchester Hospital’s therapeutic garden space, the 43-year-old Princess of Wales offered candid reflections that stunned even seasoned royal watchers.
“You put on the brave face during treatment,” Kate told staff and patients. “Then treatment ends, and you think, ‘Okay, I can just go back to how things were.’ But that next phase is really, really difficult. You’re no longer under constant care, but you’re not yourself either.”
The Future Queen’s Private Battle Goes Public
This marks one of the first times the future queen has openly described what life has been like since revealing her cancer diagnosis earlier this year. In January, Kensington Palace announced that Middleton’s cancer had gone into remission after months of quiet, unexplained absences from the public eye.
Insiders now confirm that her withdrawal from the Royal Ascot just hours before the event was no fluke. It was a deliberate move in a tightly managed plan to keep her recovery “as stable and stress-free as possible,” according to a palace source.
“She wants to be out there with the public again—but she knows she has to pace herself,” a former royal aide told us. “She’s dealing with exhaustion, uncertainty, and a massive emotional toll.”
Kate’s Visit Marks Emotional Milestone
The princess toured the hospital’s new RHS Wellbeing Garden, a space designed for staff and patients to escape the stress of daily life. Standing among flowers and shaded benches, Kate acknowledged the emotional toll of recovery more than once.
“Talking about it helps,” she said. “And having someone guide you after treatment—through that lost period—is so important. You need to find your new normal, but it’s not smooth. It’s a roller coaster.”
Nurses in attendance described her visit as “deeply moving.”
“She was one of us today—just a woman trying to get her strength back,” said Michelle Travers, a palliative care nurse who spent time walking with Kate. “We weren’t seeing the princess. We were seeing a survivor.”
Signs of a Comeback—But on Her Terms
Despite lingering health concerns, Middleton has slowly increased her public presence. She drew headlines last month in a turquoise coatdress at Trooping the Colour, standing proudly beside Prince William and their three children on the Buckingham Palace balcony. She also appeared at the historic Order of the Garter ceremony and later visited the Victoria and Albert Museum’s East Storehouse.
“She’s taking back control, but carefully,” said royal biographer Deborah LeClaire. “This is no return to business as usual. This is Kate rewriting the playbook.”
What’s Next for the Princess of Wales?
According to royal insiders, Middleton is expected to attend the Wimbledon tennis championships in early July, followed by a high-profile appearance during a French state visit at Windsor Castle on July 8.
After that, the Wales family is expected to withdraw once again—to their country retreat at Anmer Hall in Norfolk, a secluded 19th-century estate gifted by Queen Elizabeth II.
And as tradition holds, the family will likely join King Charles and Queen Camilla at Balmoral Castle in Scotland later this summer—marking another private chapter in a very public journey.
Kate Middleton’s battle may have started behind closed doors. But as of today, the princess has made one thing clear: she’s stepping back into the spotlight—on her own terms.
