President Donald Trump didn’t miss a beat Sunday night, turning a GOP retirement into another notch in his belt—and a warning shot to the rest of his party.
Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina announced he won’t run for re-election in 2026, just 24 hours after voting against Trump’s colossal $3.3 trillion spending package. Within hours, Trump took to Truth Social to dance on the political grave of one of the few Republicans willing to break ranks.
“Great News! ‘Senator’ Thom Tillis will not be seeking reelection,” Trump posted, punctuating the word “Senator” with scorn.
But Trump didn’t stop there.
In a follow-up message, he issued a barely veiled threat to the rest of the GOP: “For all cost cutting Republicans, of which I am one, REMEMBER, you still have to get reelected.”
The message was clear: Obstruct the Trump agenda and you’re next.
Tillis, 64, was one of only two Republicans to oppose moving forward with the so-called “big, beautiful bill,” which would slash Medicaid, balloon the deficit, and put Trump’s signature tax cuts back on the table.
He cited “devastating” cuts to health care in his home state and slammed the bill’s gutting of bipartisan guardrails.
“I cannot support legislation that would leave millions uninsured and cripple Medicaid in North Carolina,” Tillis said Saturday in a Senate floor speech. “This isn’t leadership. It’s theater.”
On Sunday night, he doubled down on his decision—and swiped at Trump’s political machine in the process.
“Thanks for the retirement wishes, Mr. President,” he wrote on X. “Looking forward to working with you for a successful 2026.”
In a not-so-subtle jab, he added, “Word to the wise, let’s avoid minisoldr,” referencing a porn forum scandal that helped sink Trump’s previous pick for North Carolina governor, Mark Robinson.
The current Senate version of Trump’s bill would add nearly $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. That’s a staggering $1 trillion more than the earlier House version.
Among its most controversial provisions:
- Massive tax breaks for corporations and the ultra-wealthy
- Sweeping cuts to Medicaid, potentially stripping health coverage from up to 12 million Americans by 2034
- New spending on border militarization and surveillance
- Rollbacks to SNAP food assistance and federal jobs programs
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer tore into the legislation Sunday evening.
“Republicans are about to pass the single most expensive bill in U.S. history to give billionaires tax breaks while ripping away health care and food assistance from working Americans,” Schumer said.
Tillis’ departure is just the latest example of Trump’s total domination over the Republican Party.
In recent weeks, the president has ramped up efforts to purge internal dissent. A new pro-Trump super PAC is gunning for Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who opposed the spending package and criticized Trump’s aggressive posture toward Iran.
Sources close to Trump say his daughter-in-law Lara Trump is being considered as a replacement candidate in North Carolina—part of a growing Trump-family pipeline for congressional seats.
Tillis, who once held mainstream conservative credentials, now finds himself a relic of a GOP era increasingly drowned out by Trump’s war drum.
His exit speech was blunt.
“Leaders willing to embrace compromise and independent thinking are becoming an endangered species,” Tillis said. “I’m not interested in spending another six years navigating political theater.”
For now, he says he’ll spend his final 18 months in office “calling balls and strikes” without worrying about Trump’s retribution—or reelection pressures.
But as Trump continues reshaping the party in his own image, few Republicans are left willing—or able—to call those strikes at all.

There you go again Pres. Trump. Fear mongering the freely elected representatives of the people to do your bidding or face the consequences. That being putting up a candidate of your choice and backing that person with an obscene amount of millions USD and tell the electorate who to vote for.
Now what’s putting average so far backing the alternate in a primary. If the incumbent representative or Senator is worth their salt and does not put themselves over country. That elected official should not fear the Trump rage, retribution, and scorn.
Doing the just and fair thing is the right thing .
Trump’s misnamed budget bill is only beautiful in the eyes of the wealthy beholder.
This with a moral compass guided character understand a lie when they come across some politically skewed to the rich only budget. This monstrosity of Trump’s creation is a total abomination.
If Trump believes something has been totally obliterated that hasn’t been nearly that, then his so called BBB isn’t nearly that, either
There have been questions about this budget raised by unbiased non political entities sufficient for doubt that should concern Republican Senators and all Americans.

FYI: it’s pretty much against anything for hard working people & all for the top 1% of the wealthiest. guess it’s ok with you to kick all the old folks out of nursing home, which is paid by medicaid? keep young ones, cuz their folks are poor from med. care?
