“I’m done with the political theater,” says North Carolina senator as Trump loyalists circle his seat

North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis stunned Washington on Sunday with a surprise announcement: he will not seek re-election in 2026, becoming the latest moderate Republican to step aside under pressure from President Donald Trump.

The move follows a blistering public spat between Tillis and Trump, who slammed the senator as “NOT A DOER” after Tillis voted against advancing Trump’s sweeping new spending plan — dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

A Clash Over Medicaid and Debt

Tillis, 64, was one of just three Republicans to vote with Democrats on Saturday to block the bill from advancing, citing concerns over its impact on Medicaid in North Carolina and the national debt.

“I cannot in good conscience support a bill that would slash $38.9 billion in Medicaid funding to my state,” Tillis posted on X. “The Senate needs to return to the House’s more balanced version — one that includes work requirements without gutting coverage for vulnerable families.”

The bill, which narrowly passed in a 51-49 procedural vote, is expected to balloon the U.S. debt by more than $4 trillion over the next decade, according to nonpartisan budget estimates.

Trump’s Revenge — and a Primary Threat

Trump wasted no time turning up the heat.

Within hours of the vote, the president lit up Truth Social with a threat: “Numerous people have come forward wanting to run in the Primary against ‘Senator Thom’ Tillis… I will be meeting with them.”

By Sunday morning, Trump escalated the attack, accusing Tillis of abandoning North Carolinians during historic floods and labeling him a “TALKER and complainer.”

The Final Straw

Just minutes after Trump’s Sunday morning post, Tillis released a carefully worded statement that confirmed the rumors swirling for weeks in Capitol corridors.

“Over the last year, many of my colleagues — even my friends — have noticed I haven’t been eager about a re-election campaign,” Tillis said. “After reflecting deeply, I’ve decided I will not seek another term. Six more years of Washington gridlock or more time with my wife Susan, our children, and our grandkids? That’s an easy choice.”

Behind the scenes, sources say Tillis has grown increasingly alienated from Trump’s reshaped GOP. His bipartisan immigration reform work and resistance to some of Trump’s most controversial judicial nominees made him a target of MAGA loyalists long before this latest feud.

The MAGA Machine Moves In

Trump’s allies in North Carolina wasted no time organizing. A senior Trump campaign aide told this outlet Sunday night that “vetting for a Trump-aligned primary challenger is already underway,” with several far-right state lawmakers under consideration.

Political analysts believe Tillis’s departure could open the door to a full-blown ideological brawl in one of the nation’s most competitive Senate battlegrounds.

“This isn’t just about one seat — it’s about the soul of the Republican Party,” said UNC political scientist Dr. Maya Franklin. “Tillis represented the old guard. Trump is clearing the deck.”

A Warning Shot for the GOP

Democrats, meanwhile, saw the resignation as proof that Trump continues to dominate the GOP by fear and force.

“This is what happens when you cross Trump: you’re pushed out, humiliated, and replaced,” tweeted Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX). “So much for the party of free thinking.”

Tillis first won his Senate seat in 2014, defeating Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan. His retirement will mark the end of a decade-long tenure characterized by cautious centrism and quiet deal-making — a style increasingly out of step with Trump-era politics.

As Trump barrels ahead with his signature bill and eyes total loyalty from Capitol Hill, the message to GOP lawmakers is clear: get in line, or get out.

Democrats are already eyeing the seat — and betting North Carolina may be more up for grabs than ever.
