Second Lady Usha Vance broke her silence—but not much else—during a rare appearance on Meghan McCain’s podcast Citizen McCain this week, sidestepping questions about her future and avoiding any mention of the man her husband serves: President Donald Trump.
Usha, wife of Vice President JD Vance, offered an unusually candid window into her mindset as she occupies the second-highest unelected role in American politics. Her message was unmistakable: she’s counting the days until it’s over.
“In a dream world, eventually I’ll be able to live in my home and kind of continue my career,” said Vance, a Yale Law graduate and former corporate attorney. “I’m not plotting out next steps or really trying for anything after this.”
The remark came after McCain raised the possibility of Usha stepping into Melania Trump’s shoes one day—a prospect that the second lady neither embraced nor flatly denied. Instead, she sounded like someone longing for an exit.
“I’m just sort of along for the ride,” she said. “This is maybe truly the fun part.”
But the “fun” may be in short supply. While Usha presented herself as easygoing and apolitical, her silence has raised red flags among friends and former colleagues—particularly given her husband’s embrace of hardline immigration policies, culture war rhetoric, and public hostility toward academic institutions.
“She was always thoughtful, principled, and progressive,” said one former classmate from Yale Law School who asked not to be named. “It’s hard to reconcile that with what she’s tacitly supporting now.”
Usha’s roots are a stark contrast to the policies pushed by the administration she now serves. Born to Indian immigrant academics, her own American citizenship was solidified by the very birthright clause her husband and Trump are now campaigning to repeal. Despite this, she’s remained conspicuously quiet—refusing interview requests from The New York Times and, notably, never once naming Donald Trump during her full hour with McCain.
In fact, the Times reported that over a dozen of Usha’s old friends would only speak anonymously about her “new life in Trump’s Washington,” afraid of backlash. One said they assumed she’d be “appalled” by the administration’s attacks on law, academia, and diversity—institutions and values she once publicly championed.
Yet in public, she’s played the part of dutiful spouse. JD Vance himself acknowledged this during a campaign stop in March, telling a crowd: “My wife has to smile and laugh and celebrate after anything I say, no matter how crazy.”
The McCain interview largely tiptoed around such tensions. Instead, Usha fielded softball questions about being a vegetarian, her approach to fashion, and the stress of her role.
“My attitude is that this is a four-year period where I have responsibilities—to my family, to myself, and obviously to the country,” she said, while subtly signaling that her heart remains in Ohio, not D.C. “We moved into what we called our dream house… and it really is the place where I feel most at home.”
She added: “If I can’t get back there soon, I understand.”
It’s clear Usha Vance doesn’t see herself as America’s next first lady. But whether she likes it or not, the political spotlight is closing in—and she may not be able to retreat quietly.

I think she is a remarkable Second Lady. What is doing is out of pure love for her husband. But to that I really hate that just like Melanie she has to endure the Swamp creatures also. It’s a shame democrats and their puppets have to show very little respect for our leaders and their families. I don’t ever recall the republicans doing this to democrats leaders and their families. I have the upmost respect for them showing class and beauty. Not bending the knee for the swamp. It’s just a shame democrats have no moral’s or values. Both First and Second Ladies in this administration have earned everyone’s respect if you ask me. They don’t buy into the ugliness even being treated the way are. Jackie O was the last First Lady to show class and beauty. The First Lady and Second Lady of this administration will go down in history as just that, Ladies. They don’t play democrats games. I don’t think either of them deserve the disrespect they are getting. Their fashion of clothes are bar none 100% or an A+ at the least. But most of all they love their husbands and their husbands love them. How nice to see this. Can’t wait to see more of their creativeness they have in designs and decor over the holidays. Sure beats the bad taste of democrats. I just hope she doesn’t cave in swap. She is so much better then they are. But seeing what Melanie went through breaks my heart. Republicans know respect and love while democrats know disrespect and hate. Nice to have this love and respect back in our country by our leaders and their wives. I am glad they are very composed and take their rolls very seriously. One thing is for sure is they don’t lie to us. They don’t throw us under a bus. They don’t forget about the working class. God bless these beautiful ladies.
