GOP Senator Says She’d Consider Switching Parties?

In a political climate dominated by extremes, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska is once again refusing to fall in line—and this time, she’s openly entertaining the idea of crossing the aisle.

While promoting her new memoir Far From Home, the longtime moderate Republican told the GD Politics podcast that she’s “open to exploring something different than the status quo,” if it helps her serve the people of Alaska. That includes the possibility of caucusing with Democrats if they come within striking distance of a Senate majority in 2027.

“It’s an interesting hypothetical,” Murkowski said, carefully weighing her words. “But if it helps Alaskans—well, that’s my job. That’s what I have to consider.”

It’s a rare but telling moment in today’s Republican Party: a sitting senator seriously floating the idea of working with Democrats. Murkowski, 67, has built a career on independence. She won re-election in 2010 as a write-in candidate after losing the GOP primary to a hard-right challenger. In 2021, she was one of just seven Republicans to vote to convict Donald Trump for inciting the January 6 Capitol attack.

“People know I don’t toe the party line,” she said. “Alaskans have embraced a coalition style of governing. It’s not foreign to us. What’s foreign is the rigidity of national politics.”

Murkowski pointed to Alaska’s bipartisan state legislature as a model. “We govern together for the good of the state. It shouldn’t matter whether you’ve got an R or a D next to your name,” she said.

Though she stopped short of saying she would caucus with Democrats outright, she made it clear that her loyalty isn’t to any party—it’s to her constituents.

“I can’t pretend to be someone I’m not just to keep a job,” Murkowski said. “That’s not who I am.”

Asked directly whether she’d consider aligning with Democrats if it meant getting bills passed for Alaskans, Murkowski replied, “There may be that possibility.” She reiterated her frustration with both parties, saying neither side has shown they’re willing to prioritize people over politics.

Murkowski’s comments come at a tense moment for Senate Republicans, who are under pressure to fall in line behind President Donald Trump’s massive budget bill. Murkowski called the push to pass it by the July 4 deadline “arbitrary” and warned her colleagues not to sacrifice good policy for political optics.

“Why are we afraid of a conference?” she asked. “Meeting a date just to say we did? That’s not leadership.”

Behind closed doors, Murkowski says she often feels isolated. Speaking to The Washington Post, she admitted she’s “afraid” to speak her mind around her GOP colleagues, citing fears of retaliation.

“We used to be called the world’s greatest deliberative body,” she said. “Now I wonder if we still deserve that title—or if it belongs in air quotes.”

The senator’s remarks come amid growing rifts within the Republican Party. President Trump has been pushing his so-called “big, beautiful bill,” a sweeping spending package that critics say is bloated and fiscally reckless. Murkowski, who’s raised concerns about the national debt and foreign policy direction under Trump, isn’t buying it.

And she’s not alone. A quiet faction of moderate Republicans has begun to question the party’s hard-right lurch, especially in the wake of Trump’s legal troubles and combative stance on foreign aid—particularly to Ukraine.

Though Murkowski’s willingness to float a caucus switch is still tentative, her comments send a message: The GOP can no longer count on her unconditional loyalty.

“We need to stop thinking in red and blue,” she said. “That’s not how real problems get solved.”

If Democrats manage to flip just three Senate seats in 2027, they might not just gain a majority—they might gain Lisa Murkowski.
