In the aftermath of one of the deadliest air disasters in recent history, a harrowing scene unfolded as a survivor risked everything to save his brother from a burning plane wreck.

The chaos erupted when Air India Flight 171 crashed shortly after takeoff, leaving more than 270 people dead and the runway littered with twisted metal and fire. As smoke filled the air and desperate survivors scrambled for safety, one man was seen turning back toward the flames.

Emergency responder Satinder Singh Sandhu recalled the heart-stopping moment for MailOnline: “I saw a man in a white t-shirt walking back towards the fire. He appeared quite dazed and confused, and I shouted, ‘Stop. What are you doing? Don’t go back in there. You’ll die.’”

The man was 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, an Indian national who had just escaped the hellish wreckage. Witnesses say bystanders were pleading for him to stay away, but Ramesh was determined. “My family member is in there, my brother, and he’s burning to death. I have to save him,” he reportedly told Sandhu, even as flames threatened to engulf the remains of the plane.

Ramesh, still in shock, had somehow managed to stagger away from the fiery scene before his desperate urge to rescue his sibling took over. “There was a lot of panic and confusion, but luckily for him, he heard me,” Sandhu added. “I was screaming at the top of my voice and begging him not to go back in there, telling him to get away and walk to me.”

Emergency workers quickly intervened, pulling Ramesh to safety and rushing him to a local hospital, where he is still recovering from his injuries and trauma.

The crash, now confirmed as the deadliest aviation disaster in India in decades, has left families shattered and the world in shock. Investigators are still combing through the wreckage for answers, as the death toll climbs and heartbroken relatives gather for news.

In the midst of devastation, stories of sacrifice and brotherly love shine through the smoke—reminders of the humanity that emerges in moments of unimaginable tragedy.

  1. Engine flame-out – what else could cause loss of altitude. As the airspeed bled off it was then a slow and horrifying glide to their deaths. Just imagine the horror the pilots saw coming. There was nothing the pilots could do at that point. Tragic.
