Wayne Lewis, the voice and soul behind some of R&B’s most beloved slow jams, has passed away at 68. The iconic founding member and frontman of Atlantic Starr died on Thursday, June 5, the group confirmed on Facebook. A cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

“It’s with great sadness we have to post the passing of Wayne Lewis,” the band wrote, asking fans to “keep the family in your prayers and respect their privacy.” The post ended with a touching tribute: “Sunrise 4/13/1957 – Sunset 6/5/2025.”

The news hit fans hard, with heartfelt messages pouring in across social media. “Heartbreaking news,” one wrote. Another posted, “Sending our deepest condolences and love to the family, friends, and fans of Wayne Lewis of Atlantic Starr. He was so humble and kind.”

Many shared their shock, especially those who were expecting to see Lewis perform soon. “Omg I’m devastated. I was looking forward to seeing them perform this Sunday at Capital Jazz Festival,” one fan wrote. Another added, “Man, another R&B legend has passed. Founder and lead singer Wayne Lewis of Atlantic Starr has passed.”

Lewis helped shape the sound of a generation, leading Atlantic Starr with his brother Jonathan through a string of hits in the 1980s and early 90s. From the tender ballad “Always” to classics like “Secret Lovers,” “Circles,” “Silver Shadow,” and “Masterpiece,” the group became a staple on radios and wedding playlists across America.

Originally called Newban, the group changed their name when signing their first record deal and dropped their debut album in 1978. But it wasn’t until 1987 that they reached the top of the charts with “Always,” a song that became a defining moment in R&B history.

Even as the group’s lineup changed over the years, Wayne and Jonathan kept Atlantic Starr’s flame burning, performing for nostalgic crowds well into the 2000s.

Fans continue to honor Lewis’ legacy online. “Thank you for all your music contributions to the music industry,” one wrote. “Forever remembered. R.I.P.”

Wayne Lewis leaves behind a powerful musical legacy, a grieving fanbase, and a catalog of timeless love songs that will echo for decades to come.
