Disneyland just pulled off a real-life disappearing act—after unintentionally giving Donald Trump a starring role in its 70th anniversary display.
What was supposed to be a whimsical tribute to Walt Disney’s legacy quickly turned into a social media frenzy when sharp-eyed visitors pointed out that one of the decorative spires on a new miniature castle bore an uncanny resemblance to the 47th president. From the unmistakable swoop of the hair to the sharp finger-point, it wasn’t Walt Disney people were seeing—it was Trump.
“I gasped,” said longtime Disneyland annual passholder Megan Rothstein, 42, from Los Angeles. “I thought, ‘Why is Trump on the castle?’ It was bizarre.”
A Magical Misfire
The castle model, installed as part of Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebration, was designed with spires representing different “lands” within the park. But the spire meant to honor the beloved “Partners” statue—Walt Disney holding hands with Mickey—missed the mark spectacularly. Instead of evoking the visionary founder, it appeared to feature a stern figure with a puffed chest, pointed finger, and that familiar swoop of golden hair.
The internet took notice.
“Everyone thinks it looks like Trump,” wrote Disney influencer Matt Desmond in a May 11 Instagram post. Desmond, who has more than 57,000 followers, called it “a horrible aesthetic choice,” noting that even casual fans were spotting the resemblance.
Gone Without a Trace
Less than 48 hours later, the Trump-esque topper vanished. Desmond returned to the park and reported that the spire had been quietly cordoned off with a temporary barrier—and then removed altogether. By May 13, a more neutral figure had taken its place.
Disney, true to form, said nothing publicly. No statement. No explanation. Just a subtle swap-out, as if it never happened.
Not the First Controversy
This isn’t the first time Disneyland has faced political backlash. In recent years, the park has walked a tightrope between maintaining its apolitical image and responding to shifting cultural expectations.
But this time, the controversy wasn’t about political messaging—it was about optics. And for a brand that markets itself as a fantasyland free from real-world strife, the unintentional nod to one of the most polarizing figures in American politics was a jarring slip.
“It’s Disneyland. I’m here for churros and fireworks, not a golden idol of Trump,” joked parkgoer Jamal Carter, 35, visiting from Chicago with his family. “Glad they fixed it. That hair was a dead giveaway.”
Silence Speaks Volumes
Though Disney has offered no official comment, insiders suggest the decision to remove the spire was made swiftly after internal teams reviewed the guest feedback and social media uproar. “It was drawing the wrong kind of attention,” said one former Imagineer who spoke on condition of anonymity. “They weren’t going to let that sit there and become a meme.”
