Woman Stabs Elderly Man to Death at Senior Living Facility

A 68-year-old Florida woman is behind bars after allegedly stabbing a 73-year-old man to death inside a Jacksonville senior living complex—just months after the victim relocated to be closer to his family.

The horrifying crime unfolded Tuesday morning at Morris Manor Apartments, a government-subsidized residence for seniors and disabled adults. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says officers arrived to find Robert Tucker, 73, bleeding out in the building’s lobby with multiple stab wounds to his chest. Emergency crews from Jacksonville Fire and Rescue confirmed he was dead at the scene.

A blood trail led them to his accused killer.

Officers followed the gruesome scene—pools of blood in the hallway, elevator, and stairwell—to a specific apartment. Inside, they say they found Carol Carroll, 68, emerging from a back bedroom. She was taken into custody without incident.

Police quickly obtained a warrant and searched Carroll’s unit. According to the arrest affidavit, they discovered a knife covered in blood inside a brown handbag in the bedroom, blood stains throughout the apartment, and a blood-soaked rag—evidence authorities say ties Carroll directly to the fatal stabbing.

What led to the violence? That part remains a mystery.

Police say Carroll and Tucker knew each other. In fact, they’d been living together in Carroll’s apartment for some time. But the exact nature of their relationship—and what sparked the deadly altercation—remains unclear.

A security guard at the complex told officers he had seen neither Carroll nor Tucker behaving suspiciously before. He reportedly found Tucker’s body after returning to the lobby during his rounds.

Tucker’s family told detectives the 73-year-old had moved to Jacksonville in February to be closer to his children and grandchildren after recovering from a recent illness. He had mostly been staying at Carroll’s unit, with the exception of a couple of nights at his son’s home.

“There were no signs of violence between them,” Tucker’s sons said, according to the report. But they added that Carroll had long struggled with mental illness, reportedly living with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Mental health and housing in crisis

Morris Manor is one of many aging and underfunded senior living complexes in Florida, where residents with mental health conditions often live with minimal oversight. Jacksonville, like many U.S. cities, faces mounting challenges in ensuring adequate care for elderly and vulnerable residents.

“This is a heartbreaking and preventable tragedy,” said Dr. Lila Henderson, a geriatric care advocate in Florida. “We are placing mentally ill seniors and others in close quarters without the support structures they need. And then we’re shocked when something like this happens.”

Carol Carroll showed no visible injuries when arrested, though she told officers she had been hit. Officers took photos but found no obvious trauma.

Carroll is currently being held without bond in a pretrial detention facility and faces a charge of second-degree murder. She is scheduled to appear in court on June 4.

As Tucker’s family prepares for a funeral they never expected, many are left wondering how a man who moved to Florida to embrace life with his grandkids ended up dying so violently just steps from his new home.

“This is not what he came here for,” one of his sons said quietly, according to officers. “He just wanted peace.”
