‘Trump Nightmare’ Fuels Record Exodus of Americans to Spain

Fed up with Trump’s second term, a record number of Americans are packing their bags—and their frustrations—and heading for Spain.

According to official figures released this week by Spain’s Land Registrars, property purchases by Americans in Spain skyrocketed 57 percent in the first quarter of 2025. And while sunshine and sangria have always had some appeal, realtors and expats say this latest wave is politically motivated.

“This isn’t just about retiring by the beach,” said Graham Hunt, founder of Valencia Property. “It’s about escaping the chaos. Americans are telling us they’ve had enough of Trump, enough of the fear, and enough of the division. They want peace—and they’re finding it in Spain.”

Hunt says Americans now make up over a third of his sales. “If this trend continues, we’re looking at a 100 percent year-over-year increase,” he said. “Many rushed to buy before Spain killed off the Golden Visa, but even after that, they keep coming. They call it the ‘Trump exit plan.’”

The Golden Visa program, which offered residency to foreigners who purchased homes worth over €500,000 (around $540,000), was scrapped in April by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, citing Spain’s deepening housing crisis. But that hasn’t slowed American interest.

“We’ve had a surge in inquiries from LGBTQ+ Americans, Hispanic professionals, and anyone with progressive values,” Hunt added. “They feel increasingly unwelcome back home.”

The numbers support that claim. In just the first three months of 2025, U.S. citizens purchased 520 properties across Spain, from the bustling streets of Madrid to the serene coastline of Valencia. Unlike Europeans who tend to focus on coastal resorts, Americans are moving into the heart of the country.

Gary and Lauren Mason of Seattle are part of this growing wave. At 53, they’re ditching the tech world for tapas, retiring early in Valencia.

“We’ve been to Spain several times and loved it,” said Gary. “But this wasn’t just a lifestyle choice—it was political. Trump’s second term has been exhausting. The mood in the U.S. is so aggressive and self-centered. We just wanted out.”

Lauren agrees. “In Spain, people are calmer, more relaxed. You don’t hear about mass shootings every day. You don’t walk around tense. It’s a better quality of life—and yes, not having Trump on the news 24/7 helps.”

Gary didn’t hold back when asked about the state of the U.S. under Trump. “He doesn’t care about anyone but himself. The people he appoints aren’t qualified, and it’s embarrassing to watch. If you’re gutting the Department of Education and filling top jobs with influencers and loyalists, what future are you building?”

Their new life in Spain involves long walks, healthy eating, and a slower pace. “It’s the only country we’ve ever visited where we’ve lost weight,” Gary joked.

While political flight from the U.S. is nothing new, experts say this current wave is different. It’s not just about escaping Trump—it’s about leaving a nation many no longer recognize.

Mark Stucklin of Spanish Property Insight says the dollar’s strength played a role, but there’s more to it. “This isn’t just financial. It’s emotional. People feel like they’ve lost their country, and they’re starting over.”

And while Spain’s government may be tightening its immigration rules, American expats are still finding a way in—whether through digital nomad visas, non-lucrative retiree visas, or entrepreneurial routes.

Back in the U.S., some call them quitters. Others see them as canaries in the coal mine.

But for the thousands of Americans buying one-way tickets to Spain, the message is clear: Hasta luego, America.
