Ohio Weatherman Suddenly Axed After 30 Years—Fans Stunned

Longtime Cleveland weatherman Mark Johnson is officially off the air after decades of forecasting for ABC affiliate WEWS — and viewers are demanding answers.

In a surprise Friday announcement, the station shared that Johnson “is no longer employed” at News 5. But aside from that, they gave almost nothing away. “We want our audiences to know that News 5 and its parent company, Scripps, take protecting our audiences’ trust very seriously by requiring our employees to adhere to the highest ethical standards,” said Vice President and General Manager Steve Weinstein, who called it a “personnel matter.”

The cryptic tone of the statement has only fueled speculation — and fan frustration.

Johnson, a Kent State alum who joined News 5 back in 1993, became a staple in Ohio households, guiding viewers through everything from blizzards to sunshine with his signature calm demeanor. He was the first Cleveland-area meteorologist to earn both the American Meteorological Society and National Weather Association seals of approval.

But now, after more than 30 years on the job, he’s gone without a proper sendoff.

Social media erupted with messages of support — and confusion. “No idea what happened… but hope to see you back on the air soon,” one commenter wrote. Another fan added, “More than anyone, you know there will be sunshine after a storm. Clevelanders stand with you.”

Despite the abrupt exit, Johnson hasn’t lashed out. In fact, he replied to one supporter by writing, “I still love my News5 Family. Some great people.”

Even without his job, Johnson is still keeping an eye on the skies. On Sunday night, he posted about a small 2.5-magnitude earthquake in Ashtabula County, asking if locals had felt the tremor.

WEWS says it’s now looking for his replacement, but viewers aren’t letting go so easily.

“ABC is nothing without you,” one fan wrote bluntly. And for many in Northeast Ohio, it seems Mark Johnson will always be the face of their weather — job title or not.
