Bindi Irwin had a major health scare over the weekend, forcing her to miss the annual Steve Irwin Gala in Las Vegas. The beloved wildlife warrior underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix just hours before she was set to appear at the event honoring her late father.
Her brother, Robert Irwin, broke the news on the red carpet, revealing that Bindi had been in significant pain but was determined to show up regardless. “She came to Las Vegas and was ready to come to the gala, put on a brave face in a lot of discomfort and a lot of pain and said, ‘Nope, I’m just going to tough it out,’” Robert told People. “But the surgeon said, ‘No, your appendix is going. That thing’s gotta come out.’”
“She’s going to be OK,” he reassured fans. “She just came out the other side of endometriosis and now the appendix goes. Health is so important – it really is.”
The 26-year-old animal conservationist has become a strong voice for women’s health after undergoing surgery for endometriosis in 2023. At the time, Bindi revealed she had battled the painful condition for a decade before getting a diagnosis and eventually having 37 lesions and a chocolate cyst removed.
“My life now looks completely different than it did before I had my surgery,” Bindi said in a past interview. “I was barely able to get out of bed. Now I can do the work I love and play with my daughter.”
Despite being hospitalized, Bindi posted to Instagram to show support for her family’s cause. “Khaki by day – Bellagio chic by night! Here in #LasVegas for the #SteveIrwinGala raising funds and awareness for Wildlife Warriors,” she captioned photos of her family at the event. “Supporting conservation and remembering Dad’s extraordinary legacy.”
While Bindi couldn’t attend in person, her spirit was certainly felt at the gala. According to Robert, both she and their mom Terri were “devastated” to miss the night—but fans are relieved to hear Bindi is recovering and expected to bounce back soon.
