Elizabeth Smart is breaking her silence after the shocking arrest of her former captor, Wanda Barzee — and she’s making it clear she never believed Barzee should’ve been released in the first place.

Following reports that Barzee was recently arrested for allegedly violating her parole by visiting two public parks in Salt Lake City — an area off-limits to registered sex offenders — Smart reacted with frustration and fear, saying the arrest proves exactly why she’s been sounding the alarm since Barzee walked free in 2018.

“She claimed she was ‘commanded by the Lord’ to go to those parks,” Smart said in a statement, adding that it was the same disturbing excuse Barzee used back in 2002 when she helped kidnap Elizabeth from her bedroom at knifepoint.

“That justification is not new,” Elizabeth continued. “It’s the same reasoning she used when she stood by while Brian David Mitchell raped me.”

Smart, who was held captive for nine months in the mountains of Utah, said the recent incident confirms her worst fears — that Barzee is still a danger to society, especially to children.

“She hasn’t changed,” Smart warned. “This is why I’ve always been concerned about her being out of prison.”

Though shaken, Elizabeth thanked law enforcement for taking swift action, saying, “I’m grateful the authorities acted appropriately. This arrest reinforces why I continue to speak out and advocate for victims.”
