White House Loses It Over Trump’s ‘Mental Illness’

In a fiery on-air segment that lit up cable news Thursday night, MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell suggested that Donald Trump’s repeated confusion over basic presidential duties may signal early-stage dementia—prompting an explosive response from Trump’s top spokesperson that critics say only fueled the fire.

It started with a question that should’ve had a simple answer.

“Do you believe it’s your responsibility to uphold the Constitution?” Trump, 78, was asked earlier this week.

His answer? “I don’t know.”

For O’Donnell, that response wasn’t just baffling—it was alarming.

“Every high school civics student in America knows the answer is yes,” O’Donnell said on The Last Word. “But the former president’s answer wasn’t just wrong—it could be a red flag. A sign of mental illness. Or the early signs of dementia in a man pushing 80.”

Citing The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump—a controversial 2017 bestseller penned by 37 mental health professionals warning of Trump’s unfitness for office—O’Donnell didn’t hold back: “This is Mental Health Awareness Month. And frankly, we need to ask whether Donald Trump is mentally capable of holding office again.”

The White House Goes to War

The Trump camp immediately lashed out. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung, who has become known for launching verbal grenades at media figures, called O’Donnell “a rotting brain case suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

“President Trump aced his cognitive test,” Cheung thundered in a statement to The Daily Beast, referring to the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Trump took in 2020. “Meanwhile, Joe Biden’s handlers won’t even let him take one—because they know what everyone else can already see.”

Cheung accused O’Donnell of helping to “deceive the American people” by focusing on Trump while “ignoring the cognitive collapse” of President Biden.

But critics note Trump’s “I don’t know” habit has become more frequent and jarring. During recent campaign stops, he’s appeared visibly confused by dates, forgotten key details about the Constitution, and even mixed up Nikki Haley with Nancy Pelosi.

And while Trump boasted recently that he “passed with flying colors” on his cognitive exam, he failed to recall what was on it when a reporter pressed for specifics.

A Pattern of Deflection

This isn’t the first time Cheung has lashed out at journalists over Trump’s mental state. Just last month, he called Daily Beast executive Joanna Coles a “piece of s–t” and accused her—again—of having “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

Coles fired back, recommending Cheung “buy a thesaurus.”

“He keeps repeating the same insult,” she said on The Daily Beast podcast. “It’s getting lazy.”

Cheung has hurled the same accusation at legendary journalist Bob Woodward, former Joint Chiefs Chair Mark Milley, and journalist-author Michael Wolff—all of whom have raised concerns about Trump’s erratic behavior in office and on the campaign trail.

A Mirror Image?

O’Donnell’s explosive monologue also drew attention to what some call the mirror defense now common in Trump’s circle: accuse Biden of what Trump is accused of—only louder.

While Cheung went after Biden’s mental state, the president and First Lady Jill Biden appeared on The View this week to address the rumors head-on.

When asked about claims he experienced a “dramatic cognitive decline,” Biden simply said, “That’s just wrong. There’s no evidence of that. None.”

The Bigger Picture

The spectacle raises deeper questions about fitness, transparency, and age in American politics. Both major candidates in 2024 were over 75. Both faced scrutiny about mental acuity. But only one—Trump—repeatedly dodges basic constitutional principles while refusing to answer direct questions.

As O’Donnell bluntly put it: “If the Constitution is optional to Donald Trump, then so is democracy.”

MSNBC declined to comment further on Cheung’s remarks.
