‘Modern Family’ Star Reveals Why She Fled Hollywood

Ariel Winter has always been seen as the brainy, sarcastic Alex Dunphy on Modern Family — but behind the scenes, her real life was far from the sitcom fantasy. Now 27, the Emmy-winning actress is opening up like never before about the darkness she left behind in Los Angeles — and why she had to get out for good.

In a raw new People cover story, Winter explained that her 2020 exit from LA — along with boyfriend and actor Luke Benward — wasn’t just a relocation. It was survival.

“It wasn’t a dramatic goodbye,” she said. “It was a necessary one. I just couldn’t breathe there anymore.”

For years, Winter battled a storm of public scrutiny and personal trauma. Cast at age 11 in the award-winning Modern Family, she quickly became a target of online abuse — much of it disturbingly sexualized, despite her being a child.

“Grown adults were writing that I looked pregnant or like a fat slut,” she recalled. “I was 14. I couldn’t go online without seeing something awful about myself. It destroyed my self-worth.”

Her body was picked apart by gossip outlets. Social media trolls followed her every move. But that was only part of the story.

Behind closed doors, Winter’s personal life was unraveling. At 14, she was removed from her mother Chrisoula Workman’s custody by the Department of Child and Family Services over allegations of abuse — claims her mother has long denied. She was placed in the care of her older sister, Shanelle Gray, who would later become her legal guardian.

“My entire childhood was pain,” she admitted. “That’s my deepest wound. I haven’t even fully unpacked it.”

Winter eventually became legally emancipated at 17 — something she described on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2016 as both empowering and overwhelming.

“You handle your own bills, your own life. Nobody controls you anymore. But it also means you’ve had to grow up too fast,” she said.

Despite the trauma, Winter credits her sister with saving her.

“Shanelle is the best thing that ever happened to me. My sister is my best friend, my lifeline,” she said. “I trust her more than anyone.”

Now living a quieter life far from the glare of LA, Winter says she hasn’t left the entertainment industry — just the toxicity that came with it.

She’s currently producing her own content, developing a cooking show, and preparing to launch a podcast. And in a move that marks a full-circle moment, she’s also working with SOSA — Safe From Online Sex Abuse — to protect children from predators and amplify survivor stories.

“Technically, yes, I’m a survivor,” she said. “But I don’t want the story to be about me. I want to use my platform to help others. That’s what healing looks like for me.”

Winter says her new home — whose location she keeps private — has given her something she never had in Los Angeles: peace.

“LA will always be part of my past,” she said. “But I don’t miss it. It holds too much pain. I wanted to live somewhere I could just be — not perform, not defend myself, not survive.”

“For the first time, I feel free.”
