In a surprising moment of candor, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy named two of the most progressive voices in American politics—Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—as the current front-runners in the Democratic Party’s 2028 presidential conversation.
“They’ve got the biggest crowds,” McCarthy told Bill Maher on HBO’s Real Time Friday night. “I don’t think that’s how it ends up, but right now, they’re the ones leading the conversation.”
It’s a bold statement from a staunch Trump ally who left Congress in 2023 amid Republican infighting. But McCarthy’s admission underscores what’s becoming harder to ignore: Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez have ignited a political energy that traditional Democratic leaders have struggled to match in the post-Biden era.
A Party at a Crossroads
After a bruising 2024 election that returned Donald Trump to the White House, Democrats are still grappling with the question of who will carry the party forward. President Biden’s decision not to seek another term has created a vacuum, with centrists and progressives now jockeying to define the future of the left.
While some Democratic strategists continue to float names like Vice President Kamala Harris, Governor Gavin Newsom, and Secretary Pete Buttigieg, none have generated the grassroots enthusiasm that Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez are currently commanding on the road.
Their “Fighting Oligarchy” tour has drawn thousands from coast to coast—even in deep red strongholds like Idaho and West Virginia. The events blend campaign rally fervor with moral urgency, touching on everything from corporate greed to health care to Gaza.
“It’s not about a campaign—it’s about the people,” Ocasio-Cortez said outside a recent event in New York. “We’ve got families getting kicked off Medicaid, children being deported into danger, and billionaires calling the shots in Washington. The system is failing the working class.”
Sanders Isn’t Ruling Anything Out
At 83, Sanders is not expected to mount another run for president—but he’s also not backing down from the national stage. On X, formerly Twitter, he recently warned, “Trump and his billionaire gang are attacking our democracy and ripping off the working class. We need leaders with the backbone to take them on.”
Anna Bahr, Sanders’ longtime communications director, told Newsweek that the senator’s message is breaking through across party lines.
“We’re seeing Trump supporters, disaffected Democrats, independents—people who’ve never been political—coming out to these rallies. It’s not left versus right anymore. It’s the powerful versus everyone else.”
Polls Suggest a Shifting Landscape
Despite Sanders’ age and AOC’s relative political youth (she turns 35 this year—the minimum age for the presidency), some recent polls suggest they’re resonating with voters. A Quantus Insights survey of 1,000 registered voters found Kamala Harris leading with 30%, followed by Ocasio-Cortez at 14%. Sanders registered at 6%, but analysts caution that early polling often reflects name recognition more than voter commitment.
What’s clear is that Ocasio-Cortez, once seen as a firebrand outsider, is now viewed as a viable national contender. Her base includes Gen Z and Millennial voters, Latinos, and younger working-class Americans who feel increasingly disillusioned with establishment Democrats.
“She speaks truth to power,” said Maya Johnson, a 29-year-old nurse in Phoenix who attended the recent rally. “She’s not afraid to call out Biden, Trump, or anyone else. That’s what we need right now.”
The Road Ahead
While McCarthy insists the Sanders-AOC momentum “won’t sustain itself,” the size and passion of their crowds suggest otherwise. Their populist message is resonating in a political climate shaped by economic anxiety, climate disasters, and attacks on democratic institutions.
Even billionaire Elon Musk has weighed in, calling Sanders “fully communist” on social media—an insult that only seemed to fuel enthusiasm among supporters who proudly wear their “Tax the Rich” merch.
With the 2028 election still years away, the field remains wide open. But if Kevin McCarthy’s comments are any indication, even Republicans are beginning to take the Sanders-AOC movement seriously.
And for a Democratic Party searching for its next chapter, that may speak volumes.
Other Democrats in the Mix:
- Kamala Harris
- Gavin Newsom
- Wes Moore
- Josh Shapiro
- Gretchen Whitmer
- Andy Beshear
- Pete Buttigieg
Who emerges from the pack remains to be seen. But if this moment belongs to anyone, it’s Bernie and AOC—and they’re just getting started.

Only in their dreams!
Could be wrong of course, but I don’t believe we have quite that many brain dead voters in the country!
If the economy does good and the border secured, there is no way the democrats can win the 2028 election. America won’t forget the damage the democrats did to our country under Biden

DONT YOU KNOW AOC WAS CALLED A LIAR IN HER AREA
OMG, AOC doesn’t know straight up from six and Sanders can’t even hear himself fart, he just feels the jolt!!
Please let these two socialists run!
Socialism means take from everyone to maintain power. We’ve seen it all over the world for over 100 years.
Capitalism and private property rights has created more prosperity for more people than anything else in the 6000years it so of civilization!!!
I think people are smart enough to understand how socialism will increase the working person’s taxes!! So they won’t win!!!
So unfortunately!
‘Bernie Sanders and AOC ‘in the Lead’ for 2028′
You know things are shyt in the Dem’ camp when this Dynamic-Duo is headlines. A pair of far-left socialists, one a geriatric holdover from the last century and the other a former taco stand bar maid/social media diva.
Conservative America is praying for them to run as a team.
Communist party candidates?
I’m pretty sure the public knows the last four years with Biden and I’m pretty damn sure they don’t want this socialist shit like they’re pushing once again. they are persistent and it never seems to stop. They have the money and the power and they know how dumb and easily control their party is. The communist socialist Democrats are strong and the Bernie Sanders and AOC’s are gonna be around as long as they promise people money and power maybe not even have to work. Open our borders for whoever wants to come in all I can say hold onto your ass.
