Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s largest-ever town hall in New York’s 14th District ended in chaos Friday night as a furious constituent stood up and accused the progressive Democrat of being a “war criminal” over her stance on the war in Gaza.

The moment, caught on video and now circulating widely on social media, highlights the deepening rift between progressive lawmakers and grassroots activists over U.S. policy in the Middle East—and puts new pressure on one of the left’s most recognizable voices as she balances criticism of Israel with the political demands of national office.

‘Shame on You’: Protester Hijacks Town Hall

The disruption came just as Ocasio-Cortez was discussing healthcare policy. A woman in the crowd, later identified as Jennifer Kings, a local nurse and outspoken pro-Palestinian advocate, stood and shouted, “I am a healthcare worker, and I want to know what you’re doing about the genocide in Gaza.”

She didn’t stop there. Kings repeatedly called AOC a “war criminal,” adding, “At least with the Republican Party, we know what we’re dealing with. You’re a snake.”

Security escorted her out of the building, but not before she urged the congresswoman to “do something” and condemned the town hall for “not even having Gaza on the agenda.”

In a video later posted to her Instagram story, Kings doubled down: “Shame on these fascists. How many Palestinians have to die before she takes action?” Her account, which has more than 50,000 followers, has since gained traction with fellow activists calling for more confrontations of Democratic leaders.

Ocasio-Cortez Responds with Calm—but Critics Aren’t Backing Down

After Kings’ removal, Ocasio-Cortez addressed the crowd without naming her directly. “I more than welcome people who are angry or who disagree with me—this is a democracy,” she said. “But we have ground rules. When people hijack the event, it deprives others of the opportunity to engage.”

In a post the next morning on X, formerly Twitter, AOC remained upbeat: “Thank you to all our neighbors who joined us for yesterday’s town hall—it was our largest district town hall ever! NY-14, I love you and I’m fighting for you.”

But some progressives say her message is falling flat.

“She says she’s against war, but where’s the action?” asked Samira Badran, a Palestinian-American organizer based in Brooklyn. “She talks about human rights, but when people demand real accountability, she backs off.”

A Complicated Record on Gaza

Since the October 7 Hamas-led attack that killed 1,200 people in Israel and resulted in over 200 hostages, the war in Gaza has killed more than 52,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Israel has maintained a near-total blockade on aid and launched repeated bombardments, with the Biden administration facing mounting criticism for its military and diplomatic support of the Netanyahu government.

Ocasio-Cortez initially supported “conditioning” U.S. aid to Israel to ensure compliance with international law. She has called Israel’s siege tactics “unconscionable,” and in May 2024 praised the Biden administration’s temporary halt on a shipment of U.S. munitions to Israel.

“The United States has an obligation to uphold its own laws and to respect human rights globally,” she wrote then. “Withholding military aid is a major step toward securing a ceasefire.”

But activists like Kings say that’s not enough. Ocasio-Cortez has condemned antisemitism at some pro-Palestinian protests in New York—statements that have angered organizers who believe she is equivocating at a time when they want moral clarity.

Political Fallout Looms as 2028 Speculation Grows

AOC, who was re-elected comfortably in 2024, remains a rising star in the Democratic Party. She’s currently touring the country with Senator Bernie Sanders, rallying voters against “corporate oligarchy” and laying the groundwork for what many believe could be a 2028 presidential run.

But her base is fracturing.

In 2024, millions of young, progressive voters expressed disillusionment with President Biden’s handling of the Gaza crisis—many sitting out the election or casting protest votes. Some now say they expect more from the leaders they once viewed as movement champions.

“Alexandria was one of us,” said Omar Nashashibi, a former Sanders campaign volunteer. “But when the bombs started falling on Gaza, she hesitated. And people noticed.”

Meanwhile, the War Drags On

Ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas have stalled. Netanyahu’s government has reportedly approved plans to expand operations in Rafah, a city crowded with displaced civilians. Aid trucks remain blocked at border crossings, and the UN has warned of mass starvation in Gaza if conditions don’t change soon.

UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher issued a stark warning Thursday: “Blocking aid kills. It’s not just immoral. It’s a war crime.”

The International Criminal Court agreed. In late 2024, it issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu, citing the use of starvation as a weapon of war.

Bottom Line

Friday’s disruption wasn’t an isolated incident—it’s a symptom of a larger reckoning inside the Democratic coalition. As war continues and the 2028 race takes shape, the party’s progressive wing is demanding answers—and they’re not afraid to make noise.

As for AOC, the question isn’t just how she handles the pressure. It’s whether the movement that launched her will stay with her as the stakes grow higher.

  1. They always kill the messenger.  She was correct but not in front of the right audience.  I am certain she knew she would incur wrath directed towards her statements.  My analysis \”Brave and hones but politically off base\”.  The United States, for many political reasons, has firmly stood behind Israel and to try to change that position is the epitome of spitting into the wind.  Since she is bright, I wonder why she chose to do that? Perhaps feeling she had more to gain by her stance than she had to lose going with the standard pro-Israel position. Prof. Larry Schlatter

  2. AOC is a worthless BrainDead bartender who served import/domestic beers, because she had no idea what a “Mix Drink” was?????

  3. AOC = asshole of the commie party, which equals democrat traitor. This thing has no brain, common sense, knowledge of the constitution whic together make it the worst of the worst. Not just useless but very dangerous. All it knows how to do is lie and serve beer. Total trash. Just what NY deserves and voted for.

  4. Hopefully by now we have an idea what the Democrats want to do. They will find a way to rig the elections in 26. If people want to see us in worse shape than the last administration they have the perfect candidates. If AOC is one of them to all the people who have common sense please follow the money her an other young politicians from the left will always think they are above all and the law. Remember socialism will make this nation a place to fall in line for all your personal needs.

  5. Here we go again. Let’s talk common sense. Do you know which country put a wall around Gaza first? It’s not Israel its Egypt! A fellow Muslim country!!

Do you know there has never been an ethnic group in all of history named Palestinian? Palestine was a province of the Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire and protectorate of the British Empire!! There was never throughout history a country known as Palestine!!! Never existed! There are no Palestinians!

As to Gaza, get rid of Hamas and just watch the humanitarian aid come in and help build a country!

As long as the people of Gaza vote for Hamas as theirleaders they will be exorcised from the world! No one wants to help them even in the Muslim world! No one wants their refugees either, not Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia Turkey or Syria and many others. When Jordan took some in Hamas among them tried to overthrow the King of Jordan! Only Iran uses them in their religious war against Israel!!! They don’t help the people survive they use them to kill Israelis instead of Iranians dying to kill Israelis!!!!

Wake up! No one can help the people of Gaza until they throw out Hamas! Not DJT nor AOC, no one!!

That’s the truth and it’s very sad
