Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania is facing renewed scrutiny—not from his political opponents, but from those who once had his back.

A bombshell New York Magazine feature, packed with firsthand accounts from former and current staffers, paints a troubling picture of a man who once inspired a grassroots movement but is now accused by insiders of erratic mood swings, increasing isolation, and declining mental health.

“He’s not the same guy we helped elect,” said a former senior staffer who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity. “We’re not questioning his values—we’re terrified for his safety and the party’s future.”

From Working-Class Champion to Capitol Hill Caution

Fetterman’s rise to national prominence was meteoric. The former Braddock mayor and lieutenant governor became a folk hero on the left, running in cargo shorts and a hoodie, slamming corporate greed, and unapologetically backing blue-collar causes. But since his 2022 stroke, followed by a public battle with depression in early 2023, Fetterman’s team has reportedly watched a steady unraveling behind closed doors.

In May 2024, Adam Jentleson, Fetterman’s former chief of staff and longtime Democratic strategist, took the extraordinary step of writing a 1,600-word letter to Walter Reed’s neuropsychiatry unit. In it, he expressed deep alarm: “I think John is on a bad trajectory and I’m really worried about him… We do not know if he is taking his meds, and his behavior frequently suggests he is not.”

Jentleson’s email listed what he described as “high highs and low lows,” paranoia, lying, and “megalomania,” warning that without intervention, “he won’t be with us for much longer.”

Episodes of Disturbance—and Danger

According to multiple sources, Fetterman has had several disturbing episodes since taking office in January 2023. One staffer recalled receiving a panicked message during a retreat: the senator had apparently walked into the road and nearly been struck by a car. Days later, he was found wandering Capitol Hill appearing confused. He was hospitalized for severe dehydration.

Another incident involved an unresponsive, “catatonic” Fetterman during a meeting with Senator Sherrod Brown. Not long after, staff reportedly coordinated with the Senate physician to send him back to Walter Reed, where he stayed for six weeks.

“There was hope,” one aide said. “He came back more stable, focused. But that didn’t last.”

Internal conflicts flared, particularly around Fetterman’s strong pro-Israel stance following the October 7 attacks. Sources said the senator clashed not only with colleagues but with his own wife, Gisele.

“They are bombing refugee camps. How can you support this?” she allegedly told him during a tense argument.

“That’s all propaganda,” Fetterman responded, according to a staffer who witnessed the exchange.

In December 2024, Gisele was overheard asking on a speakerphone call: “Who did I marry? Where is the man I married?”

Office Turmoil and Alarming Risks

The high turnover in Fetterman’s office is well documented—chief of staff, communications director, and legislative aides have all exited. But insiders say the headlines don’t capture the emotional toll.

“He could be warm one day, then cruel the next,” said one former adviser. “There were times it felt like emotional whiplash.”

His behavior also became physically risky, former aides said. In May 2024, Jentleson documented Fetterman FaceTiming and reading on his phone while speeding behind the wheel. Less than a month later, Fetterman was in a high-speed crash after flying back red-eye from Los Angeles. Both cars were totaled.

“It’s a miracle no one died,” said a staffer who took his call from the crash scene.

In late 2023, the Senate physician reportedly raised red flags about Fetterman “acting bizarrely” after nearly bowling over a group of people in a hallway.

“He stopped following parts of his medical routine,” a source said. “No blood tests, no checkups. It’s like he was trying to prove he didn’t need help.”

Public vs Private Persona

Despite the behind-the-scenes chaos, Fetterman has maintained a public image of resilience—chatting with reporters in his trademark hoodie, dunking on Republicans on social media, and pushing legislation on labor and infrastructure.

During a recent sit-down with New York Magazine, Fetterman dismissed the concerns as overblown. “I’m healthier than I’ve been in years,” he said. “These are just disgruntled people with axes to grind.”

He insisted his staff “doesn’t know about my health,” and declined to speak about specific incidents. “None of it is true,” he added flatly.

Gisele Fetterman backed her husband, calling Jentleson’s warnings an effort to “scare people with exaggerated stories.”

A Party on Edge

While most Democrats remain publicly supportive, privately there’s growing anxiety.

“People want to believe in the comeback story,” said a Democratic strategist familiar with the situation. “But if there’s even a chance he’s not well enough to serve, it’s time for a real conversation—because the stakes are too high.”

Whether Fetterman can rebound again—or whether the cracks are now too deep—is a question weighing heavily on many who once stood firmly behind him.

“There’s still a path forward,” said one former aide, “but it has to start with him recognizing something’s wrong.”

  1. Yes the dems have a problem with him because he makes some sense on policy and he’s not Trump deranged

  2. Look how the left turns on their own as soon as that person agrees with anything good for the US

  3. Dems should have been this focused on Biden for all those years he wandered around and made ridiculous moves and speeches. I am NOT a fan of Fetterman, but it’s odd, and pretty predictable, how his party is questioning his mental state, when they should have long before this, during his campaign, because now he might be agreeing with the Other Side. Typical Dem move … “If you’re not with us, you’re against us”. Period.

  4. Democrats are freightened that Fetterman may say something truthful about the party and it’s direction? Since when were Democrats concerned about mantal aquity? They certainly didn’t give a rats ass about Biden’s mental stability? HELL, Democrats still believe Kamala Harris has something upstairs for her to be Presidential? MADD Magazine has more to offer!

  5. What happened to my first comment????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I’m getting tired of this crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
