In a surreal moment that captured the mood of a rocky return to power, President Donald Trump faced laughter—from his own audience—when asked what mistakes he’d made in his first 100 days. His answer? “None.”
The exchange took place Tuesday night during a televised town hall hosted by NewsNation and moderated by Chris Cuomo, former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly, and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. The event, held in front of a bipartisan live studio audience in New York, was supposed to spotlight Trump’s early achievements. Instead, it exposed deep public skepticism.
“Honestly, I don’t really believe I’ve made any mistakes,” Trump told a viewer named Lee, who had asked what he’d do differently since taking office in January.
The crowd burst into laughter.
“I think Lee is reassured,” O’Reilly quipped, trying to pivot.
But the laughter spoke volumes—and came as Trump’s third presidential term is already buckling under the weight of controversy, confusion, and cratering markets.
A Presidency Already in Turmoil
In just over three months, Trump’s administration has been engulfed in scandal, policy backfires, and legal backlash.
At the heart of the chaos is DOGE—the Department of Government Efficiency—an experimental initiative championed by Trump’s longtime ally and now senior adviser Elon Musk. Billed as a radical cost-cutter, DOGE has instead triggered mass firings, shutdowns of entire agencies, and disturbing breaches of privacy.
One particularly chilling detail: DOGE reportedly attempted to access IRS databases and citizen medical records under the guise of “efficiency audits,” sparking investigations by multiple watchdog groups. At least 14 lawsuits related to DOGE are currently pending in federal courts.
Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth—one of Trump’s most controversial picks—is under investigation for allegedly mishandling classified intelligence. The Pentagon has been thrown into disarray, with several top officials resigning in protest over what one source called “total amateur hour at the highest levels of defense.”
Deportations Without Hearings and the Rise of Shadow Prisons
Perhaps the most explosive policy of Trump’s new term has been the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants without due process. Over 250 individuals, including Maryland resident and father-of-three Kilmar Abrego Garcia, were sent to a privately run detention complex in El Salvador.
“There was no hearing, no judge, no lawyer. One morning, ICE just came and took him,” said Ana Mendoza, Garcia’s wife. “Now my children cry every night for their father.”
Human rights groups have described the deportation program as unconstitutional and “a humanitarian disgrace.” Legal experts warn it may violate international law.
Markets Collapse as Tariffs Bite
Trump’s return has also rattled the economy. His aggressive tariff regime—reviving trade wars with China, Mexico, and the EU—has tanked investor confidence.
Since January, the S&P 500 has plunged 8 percent—marking the worst market performance for a new presidency in over half a century. Trillions in global equity have evaporated. Bond markets, long considered a safe haven, are beginning to show signs of distress.
And American families are feeling it.
Grocery prices are up. Gas is approaching $5 a gallon in some states. Manufacturing orders are down. Consumer confidence has plummeted.
A new Fox News poll—ironically from the network Trump once embraced—shows only 38 percent of Americans approve of his handling of the economy. Just 33 percent support his tariff policies.
“I can’t keep my factory open with prices like this,” said Jeremy Li, a small business owner in Ohio. “We’re paying for the tariffs, not China.”
Trump’s Response: “We’re Winning”
Despite the economic headwinds, Trump insisted during the town hall that Americans just need to be patient.
“We’re in a transition period,” he said. “We’re going to see tremendous economic victories over the next year—far greater than anyone imagined.”
Pressed on how much longer Americans would need to wait, Trump simply said, “It doesn’t happen overnight, but it will happen much faster than people understand.”
But for many Americans, the promises ring hollow.
“He said Mexico would pay for the wall, now we’re paying the price—again,” said Latasha Reeves, an independent voter in Michigan who watched the town hall with disbelief. “How can you fix what you won’t admit is broken?”
A Familiar Pattern
If Trump’s answer to the “biggest mistake” question felt like déjà vu, it’s because it is. In 2016, Trump told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews that his only regret was that “I don’t have more time to talk about all the winning.” That comment, too, drew laughs.
Nearly a decade later, the pattern persists: controversy, denial, and defiance.
But now the stakes are even higher. With legal battles looming, allies under scrutiny, and the economy on the brink, Trump’s first 100 days are raising alarm bells—even among some of his former supporters.
As Stephen A. Smith put it bluntly during the broadcast: “The American people aren’t laughing with you, Mr. President. They’re laughing because they don’t believe you.”

“But the laughter spoke volumes—and came as Trump’s third presidential term is already buckling under the weight of controversy, confusion, and cratering markets.” 3rd term? um… he is in his second… Hey editors, proofread better.
Usual WOKE NextGen BS…
However, Trump has been elected President 3 times… wasn’t allow to serve the 2nd time…
Proving once again how -putting it bluntly- are so stupid that they don’t read, watch, investigate, or think. Most cannot even give an intelligent reply or answer a question intelligently showing how they don’t care about learning the truth or showing they are knowledgable about what terrible things are being done to our country and constitution.
I don’t know who wrote this story. Talking about a third term is almost impossible unless congress changes the rules. Second, the story is funny about the hat and the left goes nuts. Could it be that a family member might be running for the next election? Most likely. As far as the mistake comment yes that was funny. However, if the other party didn’t try to block everything things might have been better, but we will never know because of how they feel about DJT. Dealing with policies where the backlash was when Joe was in and Harris in charge of the border. People might want to look up 8 u.s.c 1324 to understand how some laws were supposed to work.
Nextgen propaganda, as usual. Hey we know you hate Trump and love the old guard but most of what you wrote is clearly garbage and you don’t understand economics, or how to run a business and the USA is the
Biggest business in the world!
You’re back to Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an MS13 member. Do you know what you have to do to become a member? Kill someone! This is the person NextGen and the news media is going to champion?? BTW he already had his day in court and was already under a deportation order!!! Why do you never report that???
If you are here illegally, you are not a citizen you are not part of our country entitled to the protections offered to our citizens! Go home. If you won’t go you get deported. You broke the law to get here!! Now we need immigration and need our immigration laws improved but we don’t need MS13 gang members!
Whiners and losers…..pssst lefties….he’s F!@$%#! With your dumb arses! Third term? Nah….. when asked he kinda agrees……just to get your goat! Not happenin!
I read an entirely different take on this which I tend to believe more than yours. Most of the media want to discredit whatever the President does. I can easily see the crowd laughing because we are all ecstaticlly happy with what Trump has accomplished thus far. And Doge, man, it’s about time! Finally they are rooting out the corruption that has continued for years. Of course the left hate it all. They don’t want their gravy train to be exposed, let alone end. And that, my friend, is big time reason for the laughter!
NextGenSpews, give it up already, as that’s what your writers and editors do best, spew rhetorical throat yogurt.
Maybe go to a National Enquirer or Globe format, it fits you.
