In a stunning lapse of security, President Donald Trump’s Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, had her designer Gucci handbag stolen right from under her nose during a family dinner in Washington, D.C. The theft took place Sunday at The Capital Burger, just blocks from the White House, and the missing bag wasn’t just any purse—it reportedly contained $3,000 in cash, blank checks, her passport, an access badge for the Department of Homeland Security, and even her apartment keys.
According to a law enforcement source speaking to CNN, surveillance footage from the restaurant shows a man dressed in dark clothes and a surgical mask slowly closing in on Noem’s table. He sat down at the table directly behind her, waited a few minutes, then used his foot to quietly drag the bag toward himself before scooping it up and hiding it under his jacket. He calmly walked out of the restaurant moments later.
At the time, at least two Secret Service agents in plainclothes were reportedly seated at the bar between Noem’s table and the door, NBC News reported. Somehow, the thief still managed to slip out undetected.
Noem didn’t realize her bag had been stolen until she stood up to leave. It remains unclear whether the suspect specifically targeted her or simply spotted an opportunity when he saw the luxury handbag unattended on the floor.
The theft comes just days after another similar purse-snatching took place two blocks away at the Westin Hotel restaurant, involving a man dressed in dark clothes, a baseball cap, and a white N95 mask. The woman in that case told police she wasn’t involved in politics, though investigators reached out to her, curious if the two incidents were linked.
As of Tuesday, no arrests have been made. The Secret Service has launched an investigation and is monitoring whether any of Noem’s financial tools have been used. Critics are slamming the agency for what they see as a major breakdown in protocol.
“This is a security breach that actually has high consequences,” said Jonathan Wackrow, a former Secret Service agent and law enforcement analyst. “It needs immediate and further review by the Secret Service and DHS and other law enforcement partners.”
Wackrow added that the agency may have to rethink its operational procedures for private outings.
Others have raised eyebrows over why Noem was carrying $3,000 in cash in the first place. Her spokesperson said she had her children and grandchildren with her in Washington and had pulled out the cash to treat her family to dinner, Easter gifts, and activities during their visit.
Noem briefly acknowledged the incident during the White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday but declined to comment further. The bag, the badge, and the burglar remain at large.
