Catholic Priest Shot and Killed at His Parish Rectory

A quiet Catholic parish in rural Kansas was rocked by violence Thursday when a beloved priest was gunned down outside his church rectory in the town of Seneca. Church officials confirmed that Father Arul Carasala was fatally shot by a man who approached him on church grounds.

The shocking incident has left the tight-knit community reeling.

“I am heartbroken to share the tragic news of the death of Fr. Arul Carasala, who was fatally shot earlier today,” Archbishop Joseph Naumann of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas wrote in a statement on Facebook. “This senseless act of violence has left us grieving the loss of a beloved priest, leader, and friend.”

Carasala had served as pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church since 2011. Originally from India, he was ordained in 1994 and moved to Kansas in 2004. He became a U.S. citizen in 2011 and was known for his deep faith and compassion for his parishioners.

According to a post on the parish’s Facebook page, the priest was shot at the rectory and later died at a nearby hospital. A suspect is reportedly in custody, though law enforcement officials have not yet released further details.

Kris Anderson, the parish’s director of religious education, told the Associated Press that the information they have is still limited.

“From what we know, an older man walked up to him and shot him three times,” she said. “We don’t know who he was or what the motive was.”

Officials at the Seneca Police Department and the Nemaha County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment and referred media inquiries to County Attorney Brad Lippert, who was traveling and has not yet released a statement.

Archbishop Naumann emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public but acknowledged the heartbreak spreading through the town of just over 2,000 people, located about 60 miles north of Topeka.

“Fr. Carasala was a devoted and zealous pastor who faithfully served our Archdiocese for over twenty years,” the Archbishop said. “His love for Christ and His Church was evident in how he ministered to his people with great generosity and care.”

The church community is now left mourning a priest who had become a cherished figure not only in Seneca but across the region. Carasala also served as dean of the Nemaha-Marshall region, making his loss felt even more widely.
