WASHINGTON — In a bold move to protect America’s most trusted safety net, Democratic leaders have unveiled a “Social Security War Room” to confront what they call a coordinated attack on the program led by Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.
The announcement comes as concerns mount over the future of Social Security under the influence of Trump’s controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—a new federal entity critics call a “shadow agency” designed to gut public services while avoiding congressional oversight.
“This is a five-alarm fire,” said Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR). “Social Security is under siege, and Trump’s minions are circling it with a chainsaw.”
DOGE, created by executive order in Trump’s second term and now overseen by Musk, has initiated what it claims is a “cleanup” of Social Security’s death records. But Democrats argue it’s a smokescreen for much more damaging changes.
In a post on the Musk-owned platform X (formerly Twitter), DOGE bragged about marking nearly 10 million Social Security number holders over the age of 120 as deceased, with “another ~2 million to go.”
Musk, never one to shy away from controversy, joked on social media:
“Maybe Twilight is real and there are a lot of vampires collecting Social Security.”
Critics weren’t amused.
“We’re not dealing with vampires—we’re dealing with billionaires trying to bleed this program dry,” said Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).
Senate Democrats argue that Trump’s team is manufacturing a crisis to justify privatization and cuts. SSA field offices are reportedly facing technical failures and internal instability, with some users receiving erroneous messages about their benefits.
“It’s a death-by-a-thousand-glitches scenario,” warned Linda Benesch of advocacy group Social Security Works. “We’ve already seen people locked out of their accounts. What happens when seniors stop receiving checks?”
Warren added:
“We should be expanding benefits—not slashing them behind closed doors with help from billionaires.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s nomination of Frank Bisignano, a corporate executive with a history of mass layoffs, to lead the SSA has stalled in the Senate. A scheduled vote was delayed Tuesday after the Finance Committee failed to reach a quorum.
Bisignano’s record raises red flags. As CEO of First Data and Fiserv, he earned millions while overseeing sweeping cuts.
“You don’t bring in an arsonist to run the fire department,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
“This man made a career out of slashing jobs and pocketing bonuses. Now Trump wants him to decide the future of Social Security? No way.”
A whistleblower also alleged that Bisignano has been unofficially communicating with SSA staff for weeks—a claim Senate Republicans denied, saying he was merely preparing for his confirmation hearing.
The new Democratic “war room” will coordinate town halls, field office visits, and a national media campaign to amplify the voices of Social Security recipients and push back against Republican efforts.
“This is about dignity, not dollars,” Warren said. “We’re going to tell every story, visit every town, and fight like hell to save Social Security from Donald Trump and Elon Musk.”
The message from Democrats is clear: Trump’s quiet war on Social Security is no longer flying under the radar—and they’re preparing for battle.

No one knows right or wrong. The reason that says this is because what we are told by Trump is he is going after fraud and not social security itself. Democrats will criticize it as removing social security itself. They never proved what they are saying only words that will have some thinking. My word to the democrat party is PROVE IT and show the people how it is happening. Just like with other issues when you have names that do not exist any more on a list someone is failing. In many cases according to social security from the past (right from SSA) charged a few with fraud so yes, I would like to see proof before what the democrats are saying.
