In a move that appears to undermine Donald Trump’s attempt at diplomacy, Russia bombed a Ukrainian power station just hours after Vladimir Putin allegedly agreed to halt attacks on critical infrastructure. The strike, which plunged parts of Slovyansk into darkness, raises serious doubts about Putin’s sincerity—and about Trump’s ability to influence global events.
A Ceasefire That Didn’t Last
On Tuesday, Trump and Putin spoke for nearly two hours in what was hailed as a breakthrough discussion on Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Both the White House and the Kremlin issued statements claiming that an agreement had been reached: Russia would refrain from targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure for the next 30 days while peace negotiations were underway.
“The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
The Kremlin echoed the statement, adding that Putin had given the “appropriate command” to his military to cease such strikes.
But within hours, the sounds of Russian aerial bombardments shattered the supposed truce. Reports from Ukrainian military sources and journalists on the ground confirmed that an airstrike hit an energy facility in Slovyansk, a strategic city in the Donetsk region. Telegram channels, The Kyiv Post, and The Wall Street Journal’s chief foreign affairs correspondent, Yaroslav Trofimov, all corroborated the attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed skepticism over the so-called ceasefire. “We need clarity. If there was an agreement, then why are Ukrainian cities still under attack?” Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv. “If President Trump has insights into Putin’s intentions, we would appreciate a direct discussion.”
Russia’s Mixed Signals
Despite agreeing to Trump’s 30-day ceasefire proposal, Putin stopped short of committing to a full ceasefire or even discussing an end to the war. The White House confirmed that technical negotiations were set to begin regarding a potential maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, but the scope remains unclear.
Zelensky, in a late-night post on X (formerly Twitter), accused Russia of continuing its campaign of terror against Ukrainian civilians.
“It is these types of nighttime attacks by Russia that destroy our energy sector, our infrastructure, and the normal life of Ukrainians,” he wrote. “The fact that this night is no exception shows that the pressure on Russia must continue for the sake of peace.”
Trump’s Role in the Chaos
Trump’s handling of the situation has already come under fire. Critics argue that his direct engagement with Putin—without consulting Ukraine—plays into the Russian leader’s hands.
“This is classic Putin,” said former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch. “He publicly agrees to something, then immediately tests the boundaries. The fact that Trump was so quick to declare progress suggests he doesn’t fully grasp who he’s dealing with.”
Democratic lawmakers also slammed Trump for negotiating directly with Putin without broader international involvement. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) called it “another example of Trump’s reckless foreign policy.”
“This is exactly why we shouldn’t be letting Trump play statesman. He’s being manipulated on the world stage, and Ukraine is paying the price,” Murphy said.
What’s Next?
With Russia’s latest attack blatantly violating the so-called agreement, the question now is whether Trump will respond—or if he will continue pushing for an illusory peace deal.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is left picking up the pieces, once again forced to navigate war with its allies making deals behind its back. And as for Putin? He’s making one thing clear: his promises, much like his ceasefires, don’t last long.

It isn’t about Putin sincerity…it’s a strategy to squeeze the last drop of blood out of the stone. President Trump knows the kind of negotiator he deeming either. Now President Trumps discussing with Zelenskyy the clause of the agreement while the two sides targeted & exchanged downing hundreds of drones . I call it to seal the deal with blood not with words between the mega fighters ,but it will probably be concluded at least for now. Europe will face another episode of escarmouches late.
