Former New York Congresswoman Nita Lowey, a longtime Democratic power broker and close ally to Nancy Pelosi and the Clintons, passed away Saturday at age 87 after a lengthy battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Lowey served in the U.S. House of Representatives for an impressive 32 years, where she wielded significant influence, eventually becoming the first woman to chair the powerful House Appropriations Committee in 2018. Her family confirmed she passed peacefully at her home in suburban Harrison, NY.

“Nita was the heart and soul of our family,” her relatives said in an emotional statement. “Her legacy is one of passion, purpose, and devotion. She leaves behind memories that will inspire us forever.”

A Bronx native, Lowey first took office in 1988, representing New York’s 17th Congressional District, which covered Westchester and Rockland counties at the time of her retirement in 2020. Throughout her career, she represented shifting districts, including neighborhoods in the Bronx and Queens.

Known for her partisan loyalty and progressive stance on funding policies, Lowey’s tenure drew both praise and criticism. Republicans frequently clashed with her spending priorities and liberal alliances.

“She was relentless and effective,” said a former GOP House member who requested anonymity. “You had to respect her skill, even when you disagreed strongly with her politics.”

Her friendship with prominent Democrats, notably former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Speaker Pelosi, often placed her at the center of political controversy. Yet, colleagues from both sides of the aisle acknowledged her dedication and work ethic.

Lowey’s passing marks the end of an era for New York Democrats, who saw her as a trailblazer, especially for women in politics. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
