Outrage After Green Card Holder Allegedly Stripped and Violently Interrogated by ICE

Public outrage is intensifying following alarming allegations from the family of Fabian Schmidt, a German-born U.S. Green Card holder. Schmidt’s mother, Astrid Senior, told reporters that her son was stripped naked, subjected to a violent interrogation, and detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials at Boston Logan International Airport last Friday.

“It was terrifying,” Senior recounted to Boston public radio station WGBH. “Fabian was stripped naked, violently interrogated, and forced into a freezing shower. He collapsed from exhaustion. How is this acceptable in America?”

Schmidt, an electrical engineer who has legally resided in New Hampshire since 2007 and held permanent resident status since 2008, had recently renewed his green card. The renewal, his family says, triggered an alert upon re-entry from Luxembourg, leading to his detention.

ICE declined direct comment, deflecting questions to Customs and Border Protection (CBP). CBP Assistant Commissioner of Public Affairs Hilton Beckham cited federal privacy regulations, stating only: “Travelers violating statutes or visa terms may face detention and removal.”

Schmidt is currently detained at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Rhode Island, his family confirmed. They report that Schmidt was briefly hospitalized after his initial detention but has since returned to ICE custody.

His mother received the first direct call from Schmidt only days after his detention began. “He was frightened and very distressed,” Senior said. Schmidt’s partner was initially left waiting at the airport for hours, unaware of what had occurred until contacting authorities.

Though Schmidt’s family acknowledges he had minor past legal issues, including a dismissed marijuana possession charge and a decade-old DUI, immigration attorney David Bredin clarified to Newsweek: “Green card holders typically face deportation only for serious criminal convictions or acts related to terrorism and fraud. Schmidt’s record does not appear to warrant such severe treatment.”

Immigration advocates suggest Schmidt’s treatment reflects broader tensions under President Trump’s administration. Though Trump primarily campaigned on targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records, recent incidents indicate a widening net impacting green card holders and immigrants with minor infractions.

“We’re witnessing a dangerous shift,” said Cecilia Lopez, a prominent immigration activist in Massachusetts. “People who followed every rule, believing they were secure, are now living in fear. This administration has made cruelty its policy.”

This incident comes amidst heightened scrutiny of ICE practices following the controversial detention of Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil, who remains detained due to accusations of supporting Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization. Khalil’s detention has sparked campus protests and legal challenges, raising alarms about potential politicization of immigration enforcement.

The German consulate has engaged with Schmidt’s family and is advocating for his release on bail. As Schmidt’s family awaits further developments, immigration rights groups across the country are mobilizing, demanding answers and transparency from ICE and CBP.
