A leaked memo has ignited fury among veterans. President Trump is pushing to slash 83,000 jobs at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The plan would roll back staffing to 2019 levels—even as the VA has expanded benefits in recent years.

A Controversial Cost-Cutting Scheme

The memo reveals that the VA is partnering with a government task force led by billionaire Elon Musk’s cost-cutting team, known as DOGE. Their goal? To reduce the workforce for the sake of “efficiency.”
VA Secretary Doug Collins confirmed the review in a brief video. He promised that a department-wide overhaul would streamline operations and boost care. “We must evolve,” he said, though critics argue the cuts will hurt veterans when they need help most.

Background: A History of Promises and Progress

The 2022 bipartisan PACT Act expanded healthcare and disability benefits for millions. The law was a hard-won victory for veterans, many of whom were exposed to burn pits and toxic substances. Nearly one-third of federal employees are veterans. Over the past years, the VA has grown to meet increasing demand. Critics warn that returning to old staffing numbers undoes significant progress.

Voices from the Front Lines

Veterans and advocates are not staying silent.
Senator Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq War veteran, blasted the move on social media:

“Trump’s all-out assault on the VA is a complete betrayal of our Veterans. This plan is designed to gut the VA, paving the way to privatize benefits for the rich while our heroes pay the price.”

Marine Corps veteran Janessa Goldbeck fired back on X:

“Reducing staff now, after a surge in enrollment post-PACT Act, is absurd. Math isn’t mathing.”

Army combat veteran and voting rights advocate Fred Wellman decried the decision as a political stunt. “They decided on the numbers before the review. This isn’t about efficiency—it’s about undoing progress,” he said.

Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ), a former Navy helicopter pilot, added:

“Our veterans earned these benefits. Trump’s and Musk’s plan shows they care only about their agenda, not the brave souls who served our country.”

The Stakes for American Veterans

The proposed layoffs follow a wave of firings, including 2,400 VA employees in February. Many worry that these cuts will create a twofold crisis: veteran job losses and diminished access to critical care services. A veteran activist put it plainly:

“This isn’t reform—it’s sabotage. We will fight every inch of it.”

What’s Next?

As veterans mobilize online and on the streets, questions remain about the true cost of these cuts. Will efficiency claims mask a deliberate rollback of hard-fought benefits? For now, the nation watches, and veterans prepare to defend the services they deserve.

The controversy deepens, and the battle for veteran care is far from over.

  1. In his First Term, Trump made our VA finally work right! No more dying waiting to see a doctor!
Now Trump will make the VA efficient/smart/decent… higher ups in the VA fired my VA nurse for refusing the deadly nonworking Covid fake ‘vaccine’ clot shots… and wanted to deny me treatment for the same… there’s still a lot of ‘bad wood’ in upper VA…
Plus Jokementia Bribery fired 8,000 of our Best Troops for the same reason… kept the Trans…

  2. If Durbin and Duckworth are against this I’m for it These two senators are the worst people and don’t support the changes we need

  3. Did duckworth actually fight in the field or dit behind a desk pushing papers? Our congressman said he was a vet but never saw anything but papers. Worst person we have in PA except Shapiro he gotta go

  4. Stop listing to the swamp and left wing clowns. Call your VA center or listen to Newsmax where VA Sec Collins stated no harming Vets going to give Vets more what deserve. The swamp has been stealing your money for years or some wouldn’t be sleeping on streets while illegals are in luxury hotels with everything free from food to homes. Where are you watching your news or reading in newspapers are probably just playing narrative for swamp. Tell me which President has had your back not sell you out. You all deserve the best not the streets. Trust President Trump.
