Former Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele erupted on-air during a heated discussion on MSNBC’s The Weekend, lambasting his own party for what he described as a complete failure to stand up for the nation’s principles.
Steele, a longtime critic of President Donald Trump, did not hold back as he accused Republicans of enabling a dangerous consolidation of power. Speaking to co-hosts Alicia Menendez and Symone Sanders Townsend, he warned that the country was in peril, particularly with Trump allegedly handing “absolute power” to billionaire tech mogul and DOGE Director Elon Musk.
A Heated Exchange
The discussion turned volatile when Townsend, a Democratic strategist, pressed Steele for solutions. “What would you have us do?” she asked, prompting an explosive response.
“I would like you to show that you give a damn!” Steele snapped. “I’d just like to see somebody wake the hell up and get excited about the fact that your country is under assault!”
Steele painted a stark picture of what he believes is unfolding, declaring, “They’re not at the gate anymore. They’re in your bedrooms, they’re in your living rooms, they’re in your businesses. They got your data, they got all your stuff.”
A Dire Warning for Republicans
Menendez pointed out that many Republican leaders have remained silent, either out of fear or allegiance to Trump. Steele’s response was scathing.
“To hell with Republicans!” he thundered. “They’re not going to do anything. They’re the problem!”
He went further, calling on everyday Americans—particularly conservatives—to stop assuming someone else will step up. “I want somebody to show that they care enough to get off their fat a– and say something about it,” he fumed.
The Bigger Picture
Steele’s remarks reflect growing tensions within the conservative movement, as traditional Republicans struggle to reconcile their party’s values with the influence of Trump and powerful allies like Musk. While some remain loyal to the former president, others fear the erosion of constitutional checks and balances.
Political analysts note that Steele’s anger is not just about Trump—it’s about a broader trend of complacency in the GOP. “Steele is voicing what a lot of old-school conservatives are thinking but afraid to say,” said political commentator Roger Henshaw. “There’s a battle for the soul of the party, and right now, Trump and his allies are winning.”
