Neil Howard, 46, has been convicted of first-degree murder for killing his mother, 60-year-old Norma J. Caraker, in Troy, Illinois, in September 2023. The crime was reportedly fueled by Howard’s disapproval of his mother’s dating life.
According to prosecutors, Howard strangled Caraker on the evening of September 13, 2023, shortly after she returned from a date. Assistant State’s Attorney Luke Yager explained that Howard used a cord to strangle his mother, pulling until she was no longer breathing.
During the week-long trial, Yager revealed that Howard’s anger had been building over time, as he resented his mother’s dating and the fact that she no longer gave him money. “This defendant had had enough of his mother,” Yager said. He described how Howard became more and more angry, ultimately reaching a breaking point when he was drunk enough to act on his frustration.
Caraker, a former waitress and widow of Troy’s former mayor, was remembered fondly by those who knew her. Her obituary described her as a warm, caring woman who loved her family and friends. Several well-wishers shared stories of how Caraker had helped them raise money for multiple sclerosis research.
Howard’s defense attorney, David Fahrenkamp, expressed his belief in his client’s innocence and said there would be an appeal. Fahrenkamp argued that the investigation failed to consider other possible suspects. However, the jury returned a guilty verdict, rejecting the defense’s claims.
Howard’s sentencing is scheduled for a later date, and he faces up to 60 years in prison for his mother’s murder.
