NFL Scraps ‘End Racism’ Message Amid America’s Political Shift

For the first time since 2021, the NFL will not display its “End Racism” message in the end zones at the Super Bowl. Instead, new slogans will take center stage at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday. One end zone will read “Choose Love,” while the other will continue to display “It Takes All of Us.”

NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy framed the change as a reflection of current events. “The Super Bowl is a cultural moment. ‘Choose Love’ speaks to the challenges our country has faced recently—wildfires in California, the New Orleans attack, and multiple aviation tragedies.”

However, the timing of this shift coincides with President Donald Trump’s return to office and his crackdown on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Trump is set to become the first sitting U.S. president to attend a Super Bowl, underscoring his growing influence over national conversations.

Within days of his second term beginning, Trump signed an executive order dismantling federal DEI programs and urging private companies to do the same. “We are restoring fairness by eliminating illegal DEI discrimination and preferences,” Trump declared at a press conference.

Corporate America is taking notice. Walmart recently scrapped its racial equity center and announced race and gender would no longer factor into supplier contracts. Soon after, Amazon, Meta, McDonald’s, and Target followed suit, scaling back their DEI commitments. Meanwhile, Apple, Costco, and Microsoft have pushed back, insisting they will maintain their diversity efforts despite political pressure.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed concerns that the league’s inclusion efforts might conflict with the new administration’s policies. “Our approach remains the same: We bring in the best talent. There are no quotas—just an open door for opportunity,” Goodell stated. “We’ve worked within the law under every administration, and we’ll continue to do so.”

The NFL’s “Inspire Change” initiative, launched in 2020 after George Floyd’s murder, aimed to promote racial equality through financial commitments, partnerships, and symbolic gestures like the “End Racism” stencil. The decision to replace the phrase comes at a time when racial justice efforts face renewed scrutiny from conservative groups and policymakers.

With the nation watching, Sunday’s game will be more than just a championship match. It will reflect the evolving cultural and political landscape—on the field and beyond.
