In a recent appearance on Fox News, actor Mel Gibson gushed over President Donald Trump’s handling of California’s deadly wildfires, describing him as a father figure stepping in to discipline local officials. Speaking with Sean Hannity on Friday night, Gibson expressed his admiration for Trump’s rebuke of California’s response to the crisis. “It’s like daddy arrived and he’s taking his belt off, you know?” Gibson said, referencing Trump’s sharp criticism of local leadership during his visit to survey the damage.

In a dramatic exchange with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass during a press briefing, Trump chided the mayor for not fully utilizing her emergency powers in the wake of the fires. “You have emergency powers, just like I do, and I’m exercising my emergency powers. You have to exercise them also,” Trump sternly told Bass, drawing sharp lines between his own actions and what he framed as local mismanagement.

Hannity, asking about the situation on the ground, highlighted the frustration felt by those experiencing the wildfires firsthand, particularly with reports of inadequate firefighting resources and mismanagement of water supplies. Gibson, who lost his Los Angeles home in the fires and has since become one of Trump’s “special ambassadors” to Hollywood, expressed his anger at the crisis. “It is frustrating,” he said, going on to suggest that the situation was either the result of gross incompetence or, in more extreme circles, deliberate negligence.

Gibson, who earlier this month shared a wildly conspiratorial theory on Fox News that the fires may have been “commissioned” as part of a larger scheme to force people off valuable land, acknowledged that his speculation may have been “insane.” But his frustration was clear in his comments.

The actor also emphasized the community spirit among displaced residents, acknowledging the heartbreaking reality of the devastation. “You meet people all the time who’ve lost their homes. And you talk and commiserate and buck each other up,” he said, noting the resilience of those affected by the fires. “They’re a good bunch out here,” he added, expressing hope that Trump’s involvement would lead to swift action and positive outcomes.
