A tragic act of violence claims the life of a Georgia fire chief who stopped to help after a deer collision.

Bart Cauthen, a 54-year-old Battalion Chief from Coweta County, Georgia, was killed in a shocking incident in Chambers County, Alabama, on Sunday, January 19. Two others were injured in the shooting, which occurred as Cauthen assisted a couple whose vehicle struck a deer on a rural stretch of County Road 267.

According to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, Cauthen and the driver, unable to call for help due to poor cell phone reception, walked to a nearby home for assistance. As they approached the driveway, local resident William Randall Franklin allegedly opened fire without provocation.

“This is one of the most heartbreaking and bizarre cases I’ve encountered in my career,” said Chief Deputy Mike Parrish.

Cauthen attempted to flee but collapsed in a ditch and died at the scene before deputies arrived. The injured driver, who was armed, returned fire, wounding Franklin. Both the driver and passenger of the car were later airlifted to trauma centers in Georgia for treatment.

Franklin, 33, was hospitalized and faces charges once released, authorities confirmed.

Cauthen, a 30-year veteran of Coweta County Fire Rescue, was known for his dedication and kindness. His tragic death has left colleagues and community members devastated.

“Our hearts are shattered,” Coweta County Fire Chief Pat Wilson said. “Bart was a hero in every sense. His life was dedicated to saving others, and he made the ultimate sacrifice doing just that.”

Local residents echoed similar sentiments. “Bart wasn’t just a firefighter; he was a friend to everyone,” said neighbor Carol Jenkins. “He was always the first to help, whether you knew him or not.”

While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have not disclosed a clear motive for Franklin’s actions. Initial reports suggest there was no prior connection between Franklin and the victims.

“This appears to be an unprovoked act of violence,” Parrish stated, emphasizing the senselessness of the tragedy.

Franklin faces multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder. A warrant has been issued, and he will be taken into custody upon discharge from Piedmont Medical Center.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at (334) 864-4333.

Cauthen’s colleagues have vowed to honor his memory by continuing his legacy of service. A public vigil is being organized in Moreland, Georgia, where he lived with his family.

“He embodied what it meant to serve others,” said fellow firefighter Chris Hensley. “Bart didn’t just wear the uniform—he lived it.”

As the investigation unfolds, the Coweta County community remains united in grief, determined to remember Cauthen as a selfless hero whose life ended far too soon.
