At Donald Trump’s post-inauguration rally in Washington, D.C., Elon Musk took the stage with a display that left audiences bewildered—and critics buzzing.
The billionaire Tesla and SpaceX CEO, an increasingly vocal ally of Trump, pranced across the stage at Capital One Arena, fist-pumping and swaying in what resembled a victory dance. The crowd erupted in cheers as Musk dramatically extended his arms, shouting, “Yesss!”

Once behind the podium, Musk, 53, launched into a speech celebrating what he called America’s return to “basic competence.” He touted ambitious goals, including putting American astronauts on Mars.
“Imagine American boots planting the flag on another planet for the first time,” Musk exclaimed, dramatically mimicking the motion of hammering flags into Martian soil. “Bam! Bam! Yeah!”
While his words drew applause, one gesture stood out. Musk raised his arm sharply in a motion many interpreted as a Roman salute, a symbol historically associated with fascism. The move was amplified by his pounding his chest moments prior, adding an unsettling intensity.

Political commentator Dr. Leslie Reyes noted, “The optics are troubling. A Roman-style salute in this context doesn’t just invite comparisons—it demands them.”
Critics online didn’t hold back. “Elon Musk casually doing a Hitler salute on national television,” one Twitter user wrote. Another posted a side-by-side image of Musk and a Nazi-era propaganda photo, captioned, “Day one of co-president Musk.”
Even CNN’s live broadcast hesitated, with a commentator calling the gesture “unusual, to say the least.”
Musk’s appearance marked his growing influence within Trump’s orbit. Once seen as a maverick tech visionary, Musk has become a polarizing figure, especially after acquiring Twitter and reinstating far-right accounts. His alignment with Trump underscores what some see as a pivot from innovation to ideology.
Political historian Dr. Abigail Carter said, “Musk’s transformation is reflective of a larger trend—billionaires leveraging cultural and political power to shape narratives. His support of Trump is as strategic as it is ideological.”
Supporters view Musk as a disruptor challenging political correctness and government inefficiency. Critics argue his antics, like the rally dance and controversial gestures, distract from substantive issues.
One attendee, Jason Meyers, described the rally as “electric.” He added, “Musk is fearless. People don’t like it because he’s shaking things up.”
Others, like rally protester Lisa Jordan, saw it differently: “This wasn’t shaking things up. This was dangerous. These symbols and gestures aren’t random—they’re signals.”
Musk has yet to address the backlash directly, though he tweeted after the rally, “Great energy tonight! Excited for America’s next chapter.”
As Trump’s administration kicks off, Musk’s role as a key figure in this new political era is undeniable—and deeply divisive. Whether his actions signal disruption or regression will be debated long after the confetti settles.
