Minnesota’s political landscape lost one of its brightest lights on December 27, as Senator Kari Dziedzic, a Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) leader and key architect of the state’s historic 2023 legislative session, succumbed to ovarian cancer at the age of 62.

Her remarkable career was a testament to perseverance, leadership, and a deep commitment to public service.

Born and raised in northeast Minneapolis, Dziedzic never strayed far from her roots. Representing her hometown in the Minnesota Senate for 12 years, she embodied the spirit of the community she loved. Her father, Walt Dziedzic, a prominent figure in Minneapolis city politics, undoubtedly influenced her drive for public service. “Public service was in her blood,” said longtime friend and former colleague Mary Anderson. “She knew what her community needed because she was a part of it.”

Before her Senate career, Dziedzic worked extensively in local government, including roles with the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board and the Hennepin County Board. She also served as executive assistant to U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone, where she honed her skills as a policy advocate.

Dziedzic’s resilience was evident throughout her life. In the 1990s, she sued North Stars hockey team owner Norm Green for workplace harassment, alleging a toxic environment that highlighted her advocacy for workplace equity. Though the team’s relocation to Dallas became a controversial chapter in Minnesota sports history, Dziedzic’s fight shed light on the broader issue of harassment in professional environments.

In the Senate, she championed causes that reflected her personal and professional experiences. She updated nondiscrimination and anti-harassment policies and sponsored legislation enabling victims of workplace sexual harassment to seek justice more easily.

As Senate Majority Leader, Dziedzic navigated a narrowly divided chamber to deliver transformative legislation. Even as she battled cancer, she worked tirelessly from home, ensuring that DFL priorities came to fruition.

Her leadership helped secure historic wins, including codifying abortion rights, introducing free school lunches for all Minnesota children, expanding driver’s licenses to undocumented residents, and securing billions for housing and infrastructure. “Her vision touched every Minnesotan,” said Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy. “She was a leader who turned ideals into action, even in the face of incredible challenges.”

Dziedzic’s integrity and dedication earned her respect across the political aisle. Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks, noted, “She will be remembered for her compassion and commitment to Minnesotans, which she demonstrated every day, even while fighting her own battles.”

Dziedzic stepped down as majority leader in February 2024 due to her cancer recurrence but left behind a legacy that will resonate for years to come. Her policy achievements—spanning education, healthcare, and climate change—will continue to shape Minnesota’s future.

Her passing leaves a significant void in the Senate, now tied 33-33. A special election in her safe DFL district will be called to fill her seat, ensuring her work carries on.

Dziedzic is survived by her mother, Pat Dziedzic, her five siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews. “She was more than a leader; she was a friend to everyone who knew her,” said colleague John Peterson. “Her kindness, humor, and unwavering determination will never be forgotten.”

As Minnesota mourns, it also celebrates a woman who transformed challenges into opportunities and left an indelible mark on her state.

  1. Has anyone vetted this news source? I’ve noticed their articles also come from other names (ie Rednewsnation, conservative news, etc.). But none of the sites list staff members, board, editors etc. What are they hiding?
